Organization 05336, High Reliability Special Comm, is currently seeking an experienced, highly motivated R&D Electronics Engineer to participate in research, development, troubleshooting, field testing, production, and delivery of advanced RF/Microwave Special Communication Systems. The systems built are utilized in high impact, high consequence national security applications.

The selected applicant's primary focus will be the development of embedded software for specialized RF communication systems.

On any given day, one may be called upon to perform:

+ Conceptualization
+ Requirements to development and software programming
+ Operating systems integration and configuration
+ Crafting definition documentation
+ Qualification/acceptance testing process development and execution
+ System deployment support and system sustainment activities

It is crucial to have an in-depth understanding of mixed-signal (RF, analog, digital) electrical designs which enables the control, optimization, and troubleshooting of these special communication systems. Our systems are based on sophisticated signaling techniques and ultra-low power RF receiver/transmitter designs.

Successful candidates will become part of a multi-discipline, success oriented, high output project team delivering systems that impact National Security. Projects range from very fast moving, quick reaction requests in response to real-world driven needs to longer term, life-critical efforts with thorough development requirements. This position requires occasional travel.

Required:

+ A Bachelors degree in a relevant STEM field plus 10 years related experience
+ Experience developing embedded software and firmware (C, C++) in bare-metal or lean Operating System development environments
+ Knowledge and proficiency with time-critical control of electronics and sensors
+ Familiarity with general test and measurement equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, DVM, logic analyzers) and RF test equipment (e.g. network analyzer, spectrum analyzer)
+ An active DOE Q-level security clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top Secret

Desired:

+ Proven experience and/or course work and interest in wireless communication systems
+ Experience with the following:
+ Working in linux, building kernels, installing/upgrading libraries, drivers, memory management, and customization to run on a variety of embedded devices
+ Developing mobile apps for iOS and/or Android platforms
+ Programming and debugging large multi-threaded software projects
+ Controlling RF communication systems through software and firmware while optimizing their performance
+ Using and administering software project management and configuration management tools
+ Matlab programming, data processing, and simulation
+ The ability to plan, coordinate, and document laboratory and field tests
+ Phenomenal presentation skills with interest and ability to interact with customers
+ Strong communication and documentation skills
+ The ability to work effectively on both small and large software development teams (two-to-eight members)
+ An ability to acquire and maintain SCI access, which may require a polygraph

Department Description:

The High Reliability Special Communications Department (05336) develops terrestrial, airborne, and space based special communications systems for use in surveillance and reconnaissance and high value target and material controls. Our customers include a variety of government organizations conducting special operations missions. Staff members have a diverse skills base including microwave circuit design, antenna design, signal analysis, digital signal processing, embedded software, and digital FPGA designs. Applications include long and short-range communications and transponder systems, typically utilizing ultra-low power signaling techniques. Our design challenges include highly miniaturized electronics, low-power maximally efficient transceivers, signal extraction in very low signal-to-noise environments, and signal analysis of RF and communication systems.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
