We are seeking an electromechanical technologist and invite you to apply for consideration to develop state-of-the-art focal plane array and sensor systems for remote sensing solutions. You will support science and engineering research, development, and engineering (RD&E) activities which are characterized primarily by their nonroutine, prototypical nature. You will help RD&E technical staff realize their ideas and designs and accomplish project goals. Working in a laboratory, you operate and maintain the facility and experimental equipment, perform experiments, maintain a safe environment following all safety rules, and make, record, and document observations. Additionally, you will perform a variety of technical procedures and problem solving with minimal direction.

On any given day, you may be asked to:

+ Plan and perform a variety of duties in the electronic, mechanical, optical or instrumentation areas
+ Conduct experiments to assist scientists and engineers in the performance of RD&E, and performs qualitative and quantitative analyses for work involving experimental, theoretical, or practical applications of science or technology
+ Develop new experimental processes, utilizes novel analytical techniques, establishes new characterization methods, optimizes existing laboratory and characterization techniques, and performs experiments
+ Develop, build, modify, repair, or maintain a wide variety of laboratory apparatus and equipment, and interface this equipment for data acquisition
+ Design or develop sensor characterization test beds, use software tools to develop tests and analyze data (LabView, MATLAB, Python or others)
+ Perform data analysis and interpretation, statistical error analysis, materials characterization, and information extraction, and formally document results for the customer
+ Support documentation and publication efforts, including the preparation of information for scientific/engineering publications Perform work in a safe and compliant manner, seek out domain expert advice as needed, and maintain the necessary documentation


+ You have an Associates degree in, electrical engineering, optical engineering, mechanical engineering, , or other STEM discipline; OR equivalent experience and education (No Degree + 4 years; BS/MS/PhD)
+ Your background includes lab experience, such as experiment design, detector setup, noise reduction, testing, monitoring/troubleshooting, debugging analog electronics, detector calibrations, and data analysis
+ Your skillset includes competency and interest in hands-on development and characterization of electronic, electromechanical, sensor or focal plane arrays systems
+ You possess an understanding of the scientific method and experimental procedures
+ You can obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance


Ideally, your background will also include:

+ Bachelors degree in STEM discipline, preferably Optical, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering
+ Active L or Q security clearance
+ Skill and knowledge in one or more areas of computer science, materials, lasers, optics, engineering,
+ Ability to apply analytical and computer skills
+ Experience designing, building and working with high precision optical setups
+ Ability to interface equipment to data acquisition systems
+ Knowledge of instrumentation to measure and observe physical phenomena and effects
+ Ability to develop expert knowledge of laboratory equipment and processes to enable adjusting when necessary and to recognize when equipment malfunctions
+ Ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of experimental design and results and to represent to other staff, management, and visitors, the scientific and engineering principles being investigated or developed
+ Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating anomalies and alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems
+ Ability to work independently with minimal guidance, as well as collaboratively as part of a team
+ Ability to write operating procedures, methods of analysis, and laboratory procedures
+ Excellent communications skills
+ Demonstrated ability to constructively work with teams to successfully execute complex projects

Department Description:

We specialize in developing, engineering and realizing low volume high consequence focal plane arrays and sensors for remote sensing systems. Our competencies include integrated systems expertise, and engineering of electronic, focal plane array and sensor systems for spaceflight and other remote sensing applications. We play a critical role in leading activities for the development of USNDS and other spaceflight systems.

Security Clearance:
