We are seeking an Electromechanical Technologist to join our mission-focused team that serves the Nation by developing and evaluating energetic systems for critical National Security missions.

Our organization seeks an operator to conduct nondestructive evaluations of energetic systems (i.e. explosives). Your primary responsibilities will be to operate a computed tomography (CT) system, document results and image data from CT scans, and work with the engineering team to plan and prepare CT lab operations. Additional duties may also include assisting other technologists and engineers in the preparation and execution of explosive test site operations.

You will be able to plan and execute work independently and as a member of a dynamic team. You must be well-organized and proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word and Excel). You will be afforded considerable latitude in daily operations and must be able to create schedules, neatly and thoroughly document results, and maintain an orderly and clean workspace. You will be required to safely handle, package, store, and transport energetic components; these activities will require lifting and bending and strict adherence to documented procedures. Prior experience as a radiography technician, nondestructive inspection technologist, and/or explosives handling is required. Work will be conducted on a remote testing range.


+ 2 years experience as an explosives operator/handler OR 2 years experience as a radiological worker (e.g. nondestructive inspection, CT, x-ray, fixed source, etc) OR 2 years' experience in explosives/energetics operations
+ Proficient with scheduling and documentation using MS Office products or equivalent
+ Proficiency with common hand tools
+ Experience working independently and with teams


+ 3 years of experience operating CT equipment and laboratory
+ Ability to work unsupervised and schedule tasks
+ Willingness and ability to work with explosives on a day-to-day basis
+ Detail-oriented and able to manage competing priorities
+ Prior explosive handling experience including military, law enforcement, and private industry
+ Formal training in explosives safety, radiography equipment and maintenance, or high-voltage systems
+ Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot high-voltage radiography equipment
+ Forklift or other heavy equipment operator
+ Chemical safety training
+ Radiological safety training
+ Electrical safety training
+ Current DOD/DOE security clearance

Department Description:

The Nuclear Threat Science Department executes the Nuclear Counterterrorism/Counterproliferation Program at Sandia National Laboratories as part of an integrated, national, tri-lab effort. The Department provides technical expertise, practical tools, and technically informed recommendations to NNSA to advance U.S. nuclear counterterrorism/counterproliferation objectives and build partnerships with key U.S. government agencies and certain foreign governments.

Security Clearance:
