We are currently seeking to hire an early career Electromechanical Technologist to join the Autonomy for Hypersonics Mission Campaign. You will collaborate with a team of researchers, engineers and technologists to develop autonomous flight systems. You will perform detailed design, fabrication, assembly, programming, and testing of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. This position will include both laboratory and field-testing operations. You will work at Sandia's laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, including the Flight Dynamics Laboratory and a newly constructed indoor robotarium for prototyping autonomous system hardware, algorithms and communications. The nearly 4000 sq. feet of high bay space is instrumented with a motion capture system and is co-located with an assembly lab and collaborative office space. Part of your job is to maintain and improve facilities, work areas and office in a professional and safe working condition. You will maintain vital documentation including 3D models, schematics, wiring diagrams, computer codes, users manuals, operational procedures.


+ A Bachelors degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related engineering major.
+ Experience with diagnostic troubleshooting of electronic instrumentation and digital electronic systems.
+ Ability to travel occasionally to support flight testing or field testing at various locations including remote test facilities.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance, which typically requires US Citizenship.


+ Ability to design electrical/electronic systems, conduct testing and trouble-shooting activities, and assist with system integration into full assemblies.
+ Experience with software and hardware for control, automation or sensor systems.
+ Programming experience with one or more of the following: object-oriented programming, real-time operating systems, Matlab, Python, C, C++, ROS.
+ Comfortability working in Windows and Linux.
+ Experience with solid modeling and 3D printing.
+ Familiarity or interest in autonomous systems techniques such as estimation, control, mapping, trajectory generation, vision or Deep Learning / Reinforcement Learning.
+ Experience working independently or with a team.
+ Ability to optimally coordinate and prioritize work.
+ Strong Interpersonal skills, including the ability to build effective and positive relationships with peers, leadership and customers.

Department Description:

The Technologist will be a member of the department that manages the Autonomy for Hypersonics Mission Campaign (A4H). A4H is a $38M/6.5year program responsible for an innovative research portfolio in autonomous systems development, and flight demonstrations of technology advancement. The department supports the research and development of software, autonomy algorithms, prototype hardware, target recognition, and navigation/guidance/control. We actively partner with subject matter experts both at the Labs and throughout the nation to execute high-impact research to meet national defense needs.

A4H is pursuing research and development in autonomous systems to enhance the capabilities of the nations hypersonic vehicles. A4H enables increasingly agile hypersonic weapons that adapt to unexpected scenarios, empowering the U.S. to respond to threats anywhere in the world without putting our warfighters at unnecessary risk. The challenging flight environment and limited available flight data make hypersonics one of the most complex applications for autonomy. Sandia and its partners are developing algorithms, sensors, and compact computing hardware that compress complex data processing and analysis methods into real-time decisioning tools. The goal of A4H is unprecedented flexibility in response to newly designated targets, evolving target conditions, difficult operating environments, and unexpected flight conditions. This flexibility would enable autonomous mission planning and vehicles that intelligently home-in on targets for rapid response to time-sensitive threats.

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
