We seek a strong technical contributor to perform high consequence electrical modeling and simulation analysis activities in support of a range of design, development, analysis, and research customers.

As electrical system analysts, we develop and exercise high-fidelity electrical engineering models to address a range of challenging technical issues associated with assuring performance and safety goals. We analyze complex electrical systems, utilizing computational simulations to characterize and predict all aspects of electrical system performance, including electrical interface compatibility, signal integrity, power distribution and integrity, analog and digital circuit behaviors, and electronics performance under extreme (e.g., temperature and radiation) environments. We are actively pursuing Research & Development (R&D) work to develop and apply novel modeling and simulation approaches, especially for multi-fidelity and cross-disciplinary applications.

We seek a self-motivated individual with expertise or interest in one or more of the following areas:

+ Board level electrical circuit analysis
+ Analog circuit (SPICE) simulation and design
+ Digital simulation (VHDL/Verilog) and Mixed analog-digital simulation
+ Functional or behavioral system modeling (e.g., discrete event, finite state machine)
+ Some exposure (e.g., undergraduate electrical engineering level) to relevant electrical engineering and mathematical concepts, such as: device physics, electromagnetics, and statistical uncertainty quantification (i.e., basic statistics and/or probability)

The successful applicant will effectively collaborate with a cross-disciplinary, multi-organizational team to tackle complex technical problems, perform relevant analysis, and deliver impactful results. Applicants will be expected to work on several projects simultaneously and in a teaming environment. Some travel may be required.

On any given day, you may contribute to one or more of the following:

+ Develop and simulate analog circuit (SPICE), digital logic (VHDL/Verilog), or mixed analog-digital models
+ Utilize and develop interfaces between various simulation and analysis tools to support mixed-fidelity (i.e., mixed level-of-abstraction) simulations. Examples might include analog (SPICE) simulations in conjunction with uncertainty analysis/optimization tools (e.g., Sandias DAKOTA optimization toolkit); or digital (VHDL/Verilog) simulations in conjunction with Matlab/Simulink
+ Conduct simulations on state-of-the-art multi-node high performance computational platforms for the characterization of circuit performance, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty quantification
+ Develop a detailed understanding of customer requirements and verify electrical model (e.g., electrical device, component, or system) performance to those requirements
+ Work closely with systems engineers, designers, and experimentalists to create and exercise models and analyze, validate, and report results
+ For the interested applicant, opportunities exist to pursue 1) development of innovative electrical analysis techniques; 2) work with electromagnetic effects analysts; 3) work with device physics experts; 4) work with internal code developers for Sandias SPICE solver (Xyce), and 5) work with experts across the department in the neuromorphic computing architecture work or the formal methods development teams


+ Bachelor's and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM discipline with at least two years relevant experience; or a Bachelor's and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM discipline
+ Strong interest in problem solving, modeling, simulation, and analysis
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q security clearance


+ Exposure to analog (PSPICE), digital (VHDL/Verilog), functional, behavioral, discrete event, or other circuit simulation software
+ Exposure to digital design and verification techniques
+ Electrical circuit design (analog or digital) and/or modeling experience
+ Exposure to the application of statistics to simulation results and analysis
+ Exposure to Uncertainty Quantification or experimental validation of computational models
+ Experience using UNIX/Linux operating systems and/or High Performance Computing clusters
+ Proficiency in a high-level programming language (e.g. C/C++, Matlab, Python)

Department Description:

Our electrical analysis team is growing to meet an increased need for electrical modeling and simulation analysis and modeling capability development in support of Sandia National Laboratories system development programs and other national security applications. We work closely with design engineers, other simulation code developer teams, applied mathematicians and statisticians, experimentalists, and analysts from peer electrical analysis organizations and other engineering and systems analysis disciplines. We directly support design, assessment, and analysis activities for both internal and external customers across Sandias broader national security application space. We are actively engaged in R&D efforts to adapt and develop novel analysis techniques to address a range of complex and unique technical challenges.

Our department (Digital Foundations & Mathematics) develops and maintains multiple technical capabilities. We develop and apply tools for the formal verification of digital systems, forelectrical modeling and simulation analyses, and we develop computing accelerators for extreme environments. We are always interested in candidates with cross-disciplinary skillsets who can contribute to one or more of our programs.

The formal verification activities include formal methods analysis of hardware and software; modeling and simulation of digital or software systems; synthesis of hardware (digital logic) or software to meet formal specifications; binary analysis (developing a custom lifter capability); and development of specialized software utilizing advanced mathematics to meet customer needs.

The electrical modeling and simulation work includes printed circuit board level analysis of new systems in extreme environments, development of new capabilities in Sandias internal PSPICE solver Xyce, and support for the Sandia device modelling teams.

Our work on computing accelerators includes both modeling and designing novel fault tolerant architectures and new analog neuromorphic in-memory computing accelerators.

Our department (Digital Foundations & Mathematics) consists mostly of PhDs with research backgrounds in computer science, analysis of programming languages and domain specific languages, high-performance computing, physics, electrical engineering, electrical circuit modeling & simulation & analysis, and neuromorphic computing architectures. We collaborate and team closely with organizations across Sandia and a broad spectrum of external partners.
