The Weapons Subsystems 1 group is looking to add a new member to the team!

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer (R&D Electronics Engineer) with a focus on test equipment design to join our multidisciplinary team in designing and developing advanced electronic subsystems.

The general responsibilities will range from conceptual design, detailed design (a combination of analog, digital, embedded firmware, schematic capture, board layout), and analysis. This role will lead all aspects of fabrication of hardware, define and execute qualification/testing plans, and provide field support and project management. This is a team environment with opportunities to acquire increasing levels of responsibility.

The Electrical Test Equipment Design Engineer will work with representatives from systems organizations, subcomponent organizations, test equipment, quality assurance, program management, and production, as well as external production facilities and suppliers.

An Electrical Test Equipment Design Engineer at Sandia will:

+ Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team whose task will be to define requirements, create the subsystem design, implement quality design methodology, build and evaluate prototypes, test subsystems, and support full-up system integration testing
+ Design test equipment utilizing Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) hardware compatible with the Common Tester Architecture (CTA) defined by the Kansas City National Security Campus
+ Design and develop specific manufacturing design requirements (i.e. PC board material, trace impedances, routing requirements, PC board stack-up, etc) and provide oversight of the manufacturing of PC boards
+ Perform FPGA digital design in Verilog or VHDL
+ Work with software engineers to automate the test equipment
+ Perform hands-on test and debug of circuitry, as well as hardware testing
+ Develop documentation of a given design and give technical presentations to peers/managers
+ Develop a system-level understanding of the collected data and support for anomaly resolution


+ Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field of study, plus three or more years of related experience; or Bachelor's degree in these areas, plus seven or more years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
+ Ability to obtain DOE Q level clearance
+ Ability to travel up to 25%


+ Current DOE Q or DoD Top Secret clearance
+ Experience in COTS-based test equipment design
+ Experience in FPGA design
+ Experience with LabView, Test Bench, or C Plus programming language
+ Hands-on experience testing and debugging circuitry, with clear mastery of tools such as oscilloscopes, logic/network/ spectrum analyzers, function/pulse generators, etc.
+ Strong communication skills (especially technical writing skills), interpersonal skills,and the ability to influence others
+ Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented environment and work cooperatively with other internal organizations, as well as external production facilities and suppliers
+ Ability to balance competing priorities and deadlines

The Weapon Subsystems 1 department develops and supports advanced electronic and mechanical weapon subsystems for high consequence applications requiring exceptionally high confidence, quality and reliability.
