We are seeking a Director to lead Center 8300 Chemistry, Combustion and Materials Science which advances fundamental ground-breaking research in chemical and materials sciences. This role provides leadership, development, overview, execution, and coordination of programs in basic research, exploratory development, advanced development, and system integration in the technological and functional areas of energy, vehicle and full cell technologies, efficiency, transportation fuels, the Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) Program and renewable energy. The Center has responsibility for the Combustion Research Facility (CRF), a DOE Office of Science collaboration facility. In addition, the Center provides material sciences capability for Division 8000, supporting the Nuclear Deterrence and other missions across the CA site, strongly collaborating with the Advanced Science & Technology Division (1000) and the Chief Technical Officer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

+ Drive and align the Centers strategic plan with national needs and Sandias strategic goals and steward and advance the Centers capabilities (as embodied in the organizations staff, facilities, and tools) in support of that plan.
+ Provide input and implement vision and developmental roadmaps and provide overall strategic integration and direction for organizations within the Center.
+ Manage program resources to provide appropriate technical judgment to insure meeting customer needs, integrity and consistency in the research and development process are met.
+ Partner with internal and external customers to clearly define their needs.
+ Provide expertise, evaluation and advice for other programs at Sandia.
+ Advise and assist in the development of short-and-long range plans, establishing goals and objectives for programs.
+ Lead, mentor and develop the management team and staff.
+ Oversee activities to ensure they are completed in a safe and balanced manner and in accordance with established ES&H requirements.


+ Advanced degree (Master's, PhD) in engineering, material science, or relevant discipline, with 12 or more years of relevant work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ 8 or more years of managerial experience; including experience leading and directing other managers.
+ Experience interacting with other national laboratories, Government representatives, internal and external customers, and suppliers at all levels to negotiate, plan and deliver on customer requirements.
+ Ability and willingness to travel. Significant travel required to NM and DC.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.


+ Active DOE Q security clearance.
+ PhD in science or engineering preferred.
+ Experience leading Programs for a DHS/DOE/NNSA or SPP customers.
+ Extensive relationships within the national laboratory enterprise.
+ Ability to foster a culture of inclusion and take an active leadership role in modeling and growing values in diversity, equality, and inclusion.
+ Demonstrated positive impact of leadership ability, including direct and influence management skills.
+ Ability to thrive in a dynamic and lean environment and deal creatively with resource constraint issues and uncertainty.
+ Strong technical acumen in energy and transportation related sciences with history of effective communication with a broad range of technical and nontechnical audiences.
+ Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities, mediate conflict, and apply leadership concepts and techniques.

The center is also home to the internationally renowned Combustion Research Facility (CRF). Jointly sponsored by the DOE Office of Science and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the CRF provides scientific underpinnings that enable industry to continually develop cleaner, more efficient internal combustion engines.
