Sandias Autonomous Sensing and Controls department is seeking an engineer or computer scientist to incorporate Machine Learning/Deep Learning into autonomous sensors and control systems. The successful candidate will enable rapid deployment of machine learning/deep learning systems in various areas including object detection and multi-sensor classification and should be comfortable balancing the time and deliverable commitments of multiple projects simultaneously.

The job requires clear understanding of mission from customers; definition of work scope and requirements; development of models, solutions, qualification, and documentation; communicating to stakeholders; and delivering products to customers. Our projects generally have generous budget but challenging allocation of staff and time. Collaboration and mentoring provide ample opportunity for technical and professional development.

The engineer will collaborate with experts in sensors (mechanical, vibration/seismic, electromagnetic, optical/IR, radar/sonar, acoustic, etc); signal and image processing; algorithms; embedded systems; circuits; communication; navigation, guidance and control; within the Group. Within the Center, high-priority projects are in hypersonic flights. Sandia has experts in diverse and very broad engineering and scientific domains.

Required:

+ BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or closely related STEM field.
+ Advanced-level courses in Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
+ Courses and solid knowledge of linear algebra and statistics.
+ Deep knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects of machine learning and deep learning.
+ Expertise in Python or similar high-level programming languages with appropriate machine learning, statistical, modeling, and engineering packages (such as TensorFlow and PyTorch).
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Desired:

Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following:

+ (If Bachelor's degree is not in Computer Science), an MS or PhD in a relevant STEM field
+ Professional/significant experience in one or more of the following fields:

- Machine Learning/Deep Learning;
- digital signal processing;
- image processing/machine vision;
- sensors; navigation, guidance and control,
- aerodynamics
+ Proficiency in Linux; or High-Performance/Parallel/Vector Computing; or GPU
+ Good programming and documentation practices, such as version control, commenting, adherence to the PEPs in Python, and an architecture-first mindset
+ Experience in presentation of technical results, or proposal development
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills
+ Ability to work in an interdisciplinary teaming environment
+ Ability to be self-directed and lead research projects
+ (If hired with a PhD) strong publication record in a related field
+ Strong organizational and critical thinking skills
+ Active DoD TS or DOE Q Security Clearance.

Department Description:

Sandias Autonomous Sensing and Controls department delivers sensor systems and algorithms for: Detecting or classifying targets; detecting or classifying signals or images; navigating, guiding, and controlling flight bodies, including computing trajectories for hypersonic flights; classifying or segmenting images; and classifying 1-D time-series signals such as vibration, shock, or explosive sound. The departments unique expertise enables its sensors and control systems to have small size, weight, and power (SWaP). Machine learning is reducing the SWaP even further. The sensors perform signal processing on-board in real time. They are networked and communicate with each other. They are autonomous, requiring no human intervention once deployed. The development encompasses concept, algorithm, prototyping, programming at all levels, testing and qualification, and hardware delivery. The customers are Defense (such as DTRA and DARPA) and Intelligence communities, Homeland Security, and also other groups within Sandia, especially the flight Navigation, Guidance and Control group. The department supports national security missions including nuclear proliferation detection, treaty monitoring, arms control, battlefield and other critical high-reliability missions. The department collaborates extensively with other groups at Sandia, such as Optics, Embedded Systems, Synthetic Aperture Radar, Weapon Components, Geoscience, Robotics, and Satellites. The department staff also perform fundamental research under Sandias Laboratory Directed Research and Development program, including the $35M/5yrs Autonomy For Hypersonics Mission Campaign. The department is part of the Autonomy Enterprise within Sandias Integrated Military System Development Center.
