The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has recently launched AI.EPRI, an Artificial Intelligence initiative aimed at collaboration between the AI community, electric power industry, and EPRI’s subject matter experts. The initiative is looking for an Engineer/ Scientist II to help us curate massive data sets in the nuclear industry that can be further utilized by the utility and AI community to develop innovative solutions.


The Role:
The Data Scientist will be responsible for:
• Working with the EPRI technical team and EPRI members to identify and document use cases for images, databases, time-series and other data sets.
• Understanding, documenting, and sharing the landscape of AI technologies and vendors that can provide solutions for electric power industry challenges.
• Assisting Data Scientists in ETL (extract, transform, load) processes.
• Setup an data labeling process at EPRI which will include labeling technical data sets.
• With guidance from subject matter experts develop key attributes/features to be included in the data model and help create data models for data sets.
• Facilitating a process of sharing datasets with AI stakeholders for training of algorithms.
• Refining and implementing test plans to evaluate the performance of analytical technologies.



Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Must have satisfied requirements of entry level engineer/scientist and preferably 3-5 years of experience with an electric utility or equipment manufacturer.

•    Demonstrated ability to work with SQL, databases, R, Matlab, or Python (NumPy and SciPy) for data analysis.
•    Good understanding and previous experience of using machine learning for image classification, time-series analysis, and/or natural language processing.
•    Experience with curation of datasets to develop training and evaluation data.
•    Experience performing analysis on complex data sets.
•    Good verbal and written communications skills.
•    Job entails extensive internal and external communications.


Additional Job Information:

EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
