You can be the research and development computational engineer or computational scientist/physicist we are seeking for Verification, Validation, Uncertainty Quantification, and Credibility workscope. You will be performing verification and employing methods from statistical learning on computational physics codes.

**Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:**

Implementing unit tests and using manufactured and exact solutions to perform verification on computational physics codes that span different physics disciplines

Using methods from machine learning to supplement the capability of and/or quantify the uncertaintyfrom physics codes

Developing novel and/or rigorous techniques to support these efforts and modifying existing codesto include the capabilities listed immediately above

Documenting and presenting work internally and externally

Supporting other mission related computational science

+ Masters degree in engineering (aerospace, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, nuclear), computer science, or natural science (mathematics, physics, statistics), plus one or more years of related experience
+ Background in computational physics, including one or more of the following fields: fluid dynamics (CFD), solid mechanics, electromagnetism (CEM), heat transfer, radiation, plasma, and others
+ Background in numerical methods, including one or more of the following methods: finite elements, finite differences, finite volumes, particle-in-cell, Monte Carlo, deterministic radiation transport, and other methods used to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) and integro-partial differential equations
+ Programming language experience in languages such as Fortran, C, or C++
+ Scripting language experience in languages such as Matlab or Python
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q-clearance


+ PhD in engineering or science
+ Proven experience in code and solution verification, including the use of exact and manufactured solutions
+ (MMS)
+ Experience in statistical methods, machine learning
+ Interest in performing verification, validation, and/or uncertainty quantification
+ Openness to working on different physics subject areas
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills
+ Demonstrated ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams with diverse technical backgrounds
+ History of publishing in peer-reviewed journals and external presenting at scientific conferences

Department Description:

The Quantitative Modeling and Analysis Department conducts research, development, and systems engineering in computer science and engineering to address important, complex national security problems. Key research areas include uncertainty quantification, optimization, inference modeling, data analysis, and algorithm development. Much of our application development work focuses on verification, validation and uncertainty quantification of complex problems. We provide trusted design and software development for large, operations software as well as detailed scientific computing software. The work is focused on providing efficient, validated information and technologies for use in predictive modeling and decision making.

In addition, the mission of the V&V, UQ, Credibility group is to provide research, development, and application of mathematical and experimental techniques to assess the credibility of physics-based computational simulations. The multi-disciplinary team, experienced in simulation and experimentation, draws from a wide range of disciplines, including fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, radiation effects, solid and structural mechanics, heat transfer, numerical methods, optimization, statistics, and risk assessment, to support the laboratories mission.

Verification determines whether a computational model accurately represents the conceptual-mathematical model of a physical process, and that the computational model is solved correctly. This requires an exacting knowledge of models and their numerical approximations when implemented into codes. Validation determines, quantitatively, the degree of agreement between experimental data and simulation data, including their respective uncertainties. Uncertainty quantification is a key element of validation and it encompasses a broad range of mathematical and statistical analysis methods. The combination of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification establishes credibility in our computational models, which are then employed in making high-consequence risk-informed decisions.

The analysis tools we develop can be used to (1) focus and prioritize research and development expenditures, (2) mitigate risk through exploration of system design alternatives, (3) optimize products and process in the presence of both uncertain and variable parameters, and (4) support risk-informed decision making based on statistically-quantified data.

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
