We are seeking a Staff Member to support lab\-wide efforts including flight vehicle development and flight test projects by performing research, capability development, and analyses using analytical and computational techniques\.

The responsibilities associated with this position span the spectrum of activities from research to development and applications\. The successful candidate will work with other researchers in the department over the complete capability development cycle of discover, model, validate and apply, developing new and extending existing analysis capabilities as needed to deal with constantly evolving technical needs and requirements\. The candidate will also be involved in supporting Sandias numerous flight test programs, working to analyze proposed vehicles to support design and analyze flight test data in support of these programs\. It is expected that this experience will feed back into the capability development cycle\. The successful candidate will show skills and interest in modeling research spanning multiple disciplines, including turbulent high speed flowfield modeling, fluid structure interactions and aero\-thermodynamics\.

Required:

+ Bachelors and Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or other related engineering or natural science field plus two or more years experience or a Bachelors and PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or other related engineering or natural science field
+ Experience with computational fluid dynamics modeling
+ Proficiency with the Linux operating system and experience with a high\-level programming language such as FORTRAN, C, or C\+\+
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance

Desired:

+ Experience with Matlab, Python, scripting languages and grid generation software
+ Experience with parallel programing, model development for high speed flows
+ Experience/familiarity with Verification and Validation and Uncertainty Quantification
+ Experience with computational approaches \(finite element, finite difference, and finite volume methods\) for CFD simulations of compressible High Reynolds number flows
+ Experience working on a diverse multi\-disciplinary team and familiarity with next\-generation computing programming models \(e\.g\. OpenMP, CUDA, Kokkos\)
+ Thorough knowledge of and applied experience with scientific and engineering methods and with discipline's standards for the ethical conduct of research
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to interact well with fellow technical workers with diverse technical backgrounds

Department Description:

This is a joint posting between the Aerosciences Department and the Computational Thermal and Fluid Mechanics Department\.

The Aerosciences Department offers challenging and important work relating to national security in R&D and technology applications in aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, compressible fluid mechanics, and flight dynamics\. Our primary mission supports U\.S\. Department of Energy Defense Programs, and aerosciences projects funded through the U\.S\. Department of Defense, DARPA, NASA, and industry\. Our projects span the Mach number range from subsonic through hypersonic and involve systems ranging from aircraft released ordinance to reentry systems and rocket systems\. Technical activities include experimental, analytical, and computational efforts plus support of flight test activities, both pre\-flight/post\-flight analyses and field test operations\. The Aerosciences Department maintains a strong balance of research and development activities and works synergistically with other organizations at Sandia to meet current and future customer needs\.

The Computational Thermal and Fluid Mechanics Department develops high fidelity simulation software to execute on a variety of high performance computing platforms\. Our broader code development team develops simulation capabilities for modeling compressible aerodynamics flows, shock physics, solid mechanics, structural dynamics, participating media radiation, fire environments, and incompressible fluid flow \(with capillary hydrodynamics, drying, porous flow \-\- multi\-physics\)\. Code teams are typically five to ten people, and strong interaction with the analysis teams is an important part of the code development process\. The code development efforts are focused on providing tools for analysts at Sandia and partner institutions\. In the areas of aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, compressible fluid mechanics, and flight dynamics the two departments partner closely to develop codes to support all areas of research in aerosciences\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
