The Batten College of Engineering and Technology at Old Dominion University (ODU) seeks applications from accomplished individuals to serve as Chair of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) starting Fall 2019. The successful candidate is expected to provide visionary academic and administrative leadership, and energize the faculty in advancing MAE research productivity. The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is comprised of 26 faculty, 350 graduate students, and 750 declared and intended undergraduates. Current research strength areas include advanced manufacturing, biomedical engineering, unmanned and space systems, renewable energy, computational fluid dynamics, and thermal-fluid systems. The Batten College of Engineering and Technology has eight undergraduate engineering programs housed in six departments, with an exceptionally diverse student body (27%). Close connections exist between all of these departments and local industry giving our students significant internship and employment opportunities. The candidate must have an earned doctoral degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or closely-related field, and be eligible for an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure. The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of scholarly publications, an internationally recognized research program, and evidence of prior effective leadership in an academic setting. Preferred qualifications include the ability to encourage and promote increased sponsored research activity among all MAE faculty, recruit and mentor exceptional new faculty from diverse backgrounds, lead department curriculum review and accreditation efforts, and work with the Dean to engage all constituencies to develop programs and partnerships that will advance the reputation of the program, college and university.
