Required Qualifications:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at San José State University (SJSU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of either Assistant or Associate Professor. Applicants must have a strong academic background in mechanical engineering, as evidenced by a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field, and expertise in combustion physics. Applicants must have demonstrated experience in either experimental combustion research or computational fluid dynamics simulations of fire.

Candidates must demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching in classroom and laboratory settings using a variety of pedagogical techniques and technological tools to reach a diverse population. They should also demonstrate potential for excellence in scholarly research, with an expectation of peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations. The position requires excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. Applicants should demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross- cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Responsibilities:
A key aspect of this position is that the faculty member will actively work with other faculty associated with the new SJSU Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center to seek funding and conduct research related to wildfire science and management. This center is devoted to developing strategies and science-based policy to manage wildfire and better understand how wildfire will impact people and resources in the future. This individual will collaborate with fire ecologists and modelers.

Providing quality education is a top priority for the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Candidates must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, assessment, and advisement. In addition to teaching engineering courses, faculty members in the department are expected to develop curricula and laboratories and should plan to establish externally funded research programs and publish peer-reviewed papers. Faculty members advise undergraduate and graduate students via project mentorship as well as academic planning. They also serve on committees and task forces under shared governance to improve policies and resources for the betterment of education.

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
