The Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship at SMU's Cox School of Business is searching for an Associate Director. This position provides daily support of the Caruth Institute's programs, operations, and initiatives, including program management, marketing, event planning, faculty support, club support, and general organizational support.  


Responsibilities also include assisting in the managing of the Institute's program budgets and representing the Institute at SMU and local programs, events, and initiatives. 


Position also requires strong ability to interact and develop relationships with both students and local entrepreneurial ecosystem to support the efforts of the Caruth Institute, especially within the tech community. 


Occasional teaching responsibilities in non-credit programs will be expected.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Program and Event Management: Overall project management of Institute programs, including developing budgets, timelines, and coordinating marketing and recruitment efforts for programs/events. Respond to inquiries and coordinate arrangements for speakers/instructors.  Manage potential temporary personnel and student workers who are hired for event and program assistance. 
  •  Alumni Relations:  Work with the Cox Alumni office to develop and maintain alumni relations with for-credit students and also develop and maintain relationships with non-credit students and event attendees.
  • Marketing:  Develop and implement marketing strategies including social media and print materials for external constituents in marketing materials and web presence. Also, manage temporary employees and contractors in this endeavor. 
    Support selling efforts to recruit sponsors, students, and participants in Institute programs.
  • Business and Accounting;  Manage expenses and accounts payable for vendors and programs.  Manage budget for Institute programs to meet net revenue goals.   
  • Administration:  Establish and maintain administrative processes that conform to those of the Cox School and the support the University's and the Institute's strategic plans and programs.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree required. Prefer undergraduate degree in Engineering or a technology-related field.

 

A minimum of three (3) years of project management experience of programs, products, or services in public or private corporations.

 

One (1) year of supervisory experience is highly desirable - but not required.

 

External sales and marketing experience is highly desirable.

 

Excellent written, presentation, and oral skills are required.

 

Ability to work independently and desire to work in academic programs and pursue personal growth within an academic setting is strongly desired.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

This Assistant Director position requires the candidate to exhibit:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and possess a strong customer service orientation.
  • Strong problem solving skills along with organizational and planning skills.
  • Be excellent in time management and have a keen attention to detail.

 

This position requires three (3) years of project management experience with a preference for one (1) year of supervisory experience. 

 

Strong software skills and a proficiency in MS office are required. The ability to use LinkedIn and other social media tools and event management tools are also required.

 

Although not required, preference will be given to candidates who:

  • Exhibit experience supporting customers or external stakeholders
  • Possess experience in product development
  • Have experience using project management software and relational database software.

Because of the scope and outreach of this role, attendance at evening and occasional weekend meetings of programs, clubs and classes is required.

 

Regular travel to DFW events and occasional travel to conferences and competitions outside of DFW are also requirements of this role.

 

In an effort to promote Institute programs, the chosen candidate will need to collaborate with local tech communities (on and off campus), as well as make sales calls to potential sponsors and students.
