Organization 05232, Advanced Packaging/Integration, is seeking an R&D Electronics Engineer to support research, development, and production of microelectronics packaging solutions! The successful candidate will have an educational background in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related STEM field.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

+ Conceive, lead and contribute to research and development projects for advanced packaging integration activities such as the development of microelectronics packaging solutions for Sandia’s next generation CMOS technology, and/or the development of heterogeneous integration technologies for Sandia’s Nuclear Deterrence and National Security missions
+ Advance Sandia’s proficiency in Heterogeneous Integration (HI) through the development of 2.5D and 3D integration technology and tool roadmaps
+ Conceptualize and realize HI technologies using Through Substrate Vias, flip-chip bonding, and/or related technologies for both mid-pitch and fine pitch interconnects
+ Develop collaborations with internal and external specialists for microelectronics packaging design, fabrication, integration and testing
+ Provide technical consultation for production activities including an internal production line and activities at external vendors
+ Collaborate with external packaging vendors on behalf of the department
+ Disseminate knowledge through professional conferences and/or publications in peer reviewed journals


+ A PhD or MS degree plus 4 years’ experience in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related STEM field; Relevant work experience that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the job can substitute for educational degree
+ Academic and/or professional experience in the area of microelectronics packaging (e.g., Electronics Packaging R&D for ICs, MEMS, Heterogeneous Integration)
+ The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance


+ Experience with the following:

- Packaging and interconnect development for 2DS, 2.5D and/or 3D architectures
- Silicon/CMOS fabrication and design, such as for interposers
- Managing projects, including cost, schedule, and performance
- Design and troubleshooting of packaging manufacturing processes
+ Proven academic and/or professional leadership experiences; the ability to influence technology roadmaps, especially in the areas of semiconductor packaging and heterogenous integration
+ Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in teams with ambiguity and diverse personalities
+ An active DOE Q-level security clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top Secret

Department Description:

The Advanced Packaging/Integration Department at Sandia National Laboratories is responsible for microelectronics packaging activities ranging from Advanced Packaging R&D for microelectronics, MEMS, and RFICs through high-rigor production process design SNL mission applications. The department is part of Post Fab Technologies Group within the Microsystems Science and Technology Center at SNL. The department’s projects are a diversified set of activities that include focused development for most of SNL’s Mission Areas and general research and development for future applications.
