Position Background
The Jacobs School of Engineering is at the forefront of innovation as it relates to interdisciplinary research. Our current interdisciplinary programs extend to Health Sciences, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Global Policy and Strategy, the Rady School of Management, and the Arts and Humanities. In an effort to further enhance our multidisciplinary ties, the Jacobs School is initiating a new program that will bring together the disciplines of Anthropology, Performing Arts, and Technology in new and exciting ways.

Position Responsibilities
To this end, the Jacobs School of Engineering seeks qualified applications to fill the position of Academic Coordinator, II (working title: Director, Anthropology, Performance and Technology Program). The AC II will direct the activities of other academic appointees and/or staff within the program, which is expected to include the following:

  • Academic program planning and development;
  • Assessment of program and constituency needs;
  • Evaluation of academic program activities and functions;
  • Development of proposals for extramural funding of campus programs and identification of support resources;
  • Liaison representation with other agencies and institutions in the public and private sectors;
  • Supervision and leadership of other academic appointees and/or staff.

More specifically, this role will have primary responsibility for defining the proposed Anthropology, Performance and Technology Program (working title), with the expectation that the program will evolve and change over time. Initially, it is anticipated that the AC II will develop and implement a program which creates a bridge between anthropology, performing arts and technology to act as a vehicle for positive social change. This program would include:

  • Providing the structure and support for students who wish to broaden their understanding and collaborate in the areas of anthropology, performing arts and technology to realize solutions for positive social change. These activities can take the form of senior collaborative projects, master's projects and doctoral dissertations;
  • Creating trans-disciplinary courses that would include lectures by preeminent voices in the fields;
  • Taking advantage of the Collaboratories as a meeting place for these activities; Interacting with students, faculty, social and citizen groups, governmental agencies, and industry in order to help the program grow;
  • An ever changing focus for senior projects and other activities to provide synergy between the various disciplines and stakeholders.

In addition to the above, the AC II will have the option to teach and interact with University students at all levels

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have a Master's degree or higher in a field related to one or more of the following: Anthropology, Performance, or Engineering

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in curriculum development and teaching;
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership roles;
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently;
  • Exceptionally strong organizational skills.

Salary and appointment level are dependent on experience and based on University of California pay scales
