An opportunity exists for an experienced, motivated, self\-starting Welding Technologist to join our team\. The successful candidate will operate state\-of\-the\-art welding equipment in a research and pilot scale prototype fabrication environment, interacting closely with Sandia engineers in design and fabrication activities\. The selected candidate will also be responsible for the advancement of welding techniques, design of weld joints and development of inspection methods\. The candidate will assist in the day\-to\-day maintenance and operations of our joining facility with attention to efficiency and safety\.

Performs a variety of duties to assist engineers and material scientists in the development and inspection of welded joints and hardware\.

Operates, develops, builds, modifies, repairs, maintains, aligns, evaluates, and experiments with a wide variety of welding apparatus and equipment\. Creates detailed drawings for fabrication\. Devises, fabricates, and assembles new or modified components or assemblies\. Creates welding schedules and inspection criteria for prototype hardware\. Analyzes data and recommends modifications to components or test procedure to meet desired specifications\.


+ Ability to perform manual gas tungsten arc welding\.

+ Knowledge of welding codes and standards\.

+ Skill and knowledge in welding or related technologies\.

+ Knowledge and experience with creating and inspecting welded joints\.

+ Understanding of material selection for welding applications\.

+ Ability to read and understand written or verbal instructions, drawings, layouts, and other related specifications\.

+ Ability to read and work with mechanical drawings\.

+ Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and equipment\.

+ Skill preparing and presenting reports\.

+ Ability to work independently and as well as part of a team\.

+ Strong written and verbal communication skills\.

+ Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheets\.

+ High school diploma plus three or more years of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience\.

+ Experience in a welding\-related field\.

+ 10 percent travel to DOE and vendor sites\.

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a U\.S\. DOE Q security clearance\.

+ Demonstrated experience creating quality electron beam, GTA, inertia and resistance welds\.

+ An Associate or Bachelors Degree in Welding Technology or a related field\.

+ Ability to run, program and troubleshoot automated welding or shop hardware, including g\-code and Labview based equipment\.

+ Metal machining experience\.

+ Knowledge and experience with nondestructive inspection techniques\.

+ Certified Weld Inspector\.

+ Certified Radiographic Inspector\.

+ Mechanical design experience with software such as SolidWorks, Pro/E, AutoCAD\.

+ Knowledge of metallurgy and welding materials\.

Department Description:

The Gas Transfer Systems \(GTS\) Department is a dynamic group of engineers, material scientists, and technologists responsible for designing and maintaining gas transfer systems for national\-security programs\. Our work has three major components: scientific research, advanced component development, and engineering support of existing systems\. Responsibilities include designing explosively actuated components and high\-pressure gas transfer systems, developing welding technologies, and investigating the effects of hydrogen isotopes in various materials\. The department operates a high\-pressure testing facility and a welding/brazing facility\. Capabilities within our High Pressure Facility include; burst chamber, data acquisition, pressure capability, environmental chamber, explosive test cells, hydrostatic tester\. Our personnel routinely interact with other Sandia engineering and research groups; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Los Alamos National Laboratory; production agencies located in Kansas City, Savannah River, and Texas; the National Nuclear Security Agency; and the Department of Defense\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
