We are seeking a POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTEE. The individual will work directly with a Senior Member of the Technical Staff and others at Sandia/Albuquerque to support projects at the Thermal Spray Research Lab.

On any given day, you may be called on to do:

+ Planning, performing hands-on experiments, as well as collecting and analyzing data with the goal of understanding how process parameters affect microstructure and properties for various thermal and kinetic spray processes (Plasma Spray, Cold Spray, Aerosol Deposition, Flame Spray);
+ Publish journal articles and present their work at local and national conferences;
+ Interact and collaborate with other research groups within Sandia National Laboratories to develop new research opportunities and projects.

Required:



+ Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramics, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related field;
+ Experience in ceramics and/or metallurgy;
+ Experience in designing and conducting experiments;
+ History of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance.

Desired:

+ Experience in thin/thick film technologies, particularly thermal spray, cold spray, or aerosol deposition;
+ Experience with sensors for spray based coating technologies (laser velocimetry, dual-wavelength pyrometers, in-situ substrate bending etc.);
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.



The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation. Thin film properties can also be characterized. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional (flame, plasma, twin-wire arc, HVOF) and advanced technologies: cold spray and low pressure plasma spray. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso-scale devices, electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro-metrology, as well as technical consulting. Additive manufacturing encompasses both direct write (aerosol ink jet printing, extrusion casting, and conformal printing) and metal additive (powder bed and LENS). Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.

Security Clearance:


Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted L-level security clearance.
