Technical Leader – Steam Turbines

The Position

Research project management with focus on improving the reliability and operation of existing steam turbine generator assets used in coal, gas, and nuclear power stations.  Specific job functions include:

  • Manage R&D projects, including development of project technical approach/scope, contractor selection, budget, report-writing, and customer communication

  • Lead small teams of stakeholders who advise selection and scope of steam turbine research that addresses industry issues

  • Organize and lead sessions at EPRI-sponsored industry workshops

  • Provide guidance on specific equipment issues and problem resolution for EPRI members

  • Represent EPRI’s steam turbine generator program during site visits to member companies

Job Summary

  • Plans, designs, and controls the progress of complex project work within the technical department to meet member/client objectives; prepares and presents research reports.

  • Manages projects without direct people management responsibilities.

  • Assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives or problems where the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists, and the use of creative imaginative thinking is required.

  • Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work.

  • Advises on proposal efforts for new research.

  • Maintains familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas.

  • Prepares technical publications and delivers presentations.

  • Works independently on technical activities without direct supervision

Requirements

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • 5-7 years of relevant technical experience in industry relating to coal, gas, or nuclear large steam turbine-generators.

    • Technical experience would include one or more of the following:steam turbine system engineering, field service engineering, R&D consulting, or design engineering.

  • Working knowledge of maintenance processes used in steam turbines and related auxiliarys

  • Ability to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projects.

  • Requires limited supervision and guidance

  • Responsible for the success of individual projects

  • Works closely with members, contractors, staff to manage projects

  • Manages multiple projects

  • Responsible for project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and technology transfer

  • Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Willingness to locate in Charlotte and travel.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Advanced degree in engineering preferred

  • 8-12 years of relevant technical experience preferred.

  • Varied work experience involving both original equipment design and power generation facilities.

  • Active past participation in industry conferences and workshops as a speaker.

  • Working knowledge of lubrication and electrohydraulic control systems

  • Strong experience in collaborative problem solving.

  • Working knowledge of component failure modes, life assessment methodologies, bearing/lubrication, vibration, and generator design are strong attributes.
