Technical Leader – Fuel Performance/Reliability

Charlotte, NC

Position Summary

  • Leads research efforts in the area of nuclear fuel performance and reliability, with emphasis on global utility/plant operations and reactor computational tools
  • Applies technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Participates in the development and application of products and services in those areas through contractors and departmental or cross-functional teams.
  • Organizes the external and interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budget. Interfaces on a diverse set of technical topics including but not limited to core design, thermal hydraulics, fuel material-water interactions, structural mechanics, fuel performance/reliability, and high performance computing.
  • Manages small or medium (less complex) projects including budgets and resources.
  • Individual contributor.

Job Functions

  • Plans, designs, and leads the progress of project work within the technical department to meet member objectives and priorities; prepares and presents research reports.
  • Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work.
  • Supports and leads technical engineering related communications with the client
  • Supports proposal efforts and new promotional work.
  • Preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations. Acts as technical specialist for projects or project tasks.
  • Continuing to lead national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations.
  • Works independently on technical activities with some direct supervision

Requirements

Education and Years of Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required; advanced technical degree preferred.
  • 5 -7 or more years of research and development project and promotional experience, including development of advanced concepts for internal research or equivalent experience.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understands global industry needs and operations; ability to translate research results and implement in utility/plant procedures and processes.
  • Can perform/manage multiple and tasks with limited direction.
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Possesses problem solving, creative and critical thinking skills.
  • Works well in a team environment.
  • Is willing to travel about 25% time, including international destinations.
  • Experience supporting successful proposal preparation, and marketing activities.
  • Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives using creative imaginative solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Increasing technical depth/breadth to become a subject matter expert
  • Individual contributor
  • Communicates project results to advisors and members

The Ideal Candidate

  • Understanding of light-water reactor fuel performance/reliability, core design, thermal hydraulics, and water chemistry; utility and nuclear plant experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with industry issues related to in-reactor fuel performance/reliability and used fuel / high level waste management.
  • Experience in applying advanced modeling and simulation techniques and methodologies.
  • Ability to communicate with technical and managerial teams about the status of complex projects.
