Reliability, Maintainability and Safety Engineering has an opening within the Systems Product Assurance Organization for a Safety Engineering Discipline Lead to work on the next generation of military and large commercial aircraft engines.

The safety engineering discipline lead will lead efforts to establish safety design requirements that drive/influence designs across all programs to ensure the safety of P&W products is world class. The safety engineering discipline will be responsible for technical development of safety analysis that demonstrates that the system design meets safety requirements and serves as evidence for safety certification and/or acceptance by the acquiring regulating body.

Tasks will include:

  • Working with engineers throughout the organization, evaluate systems interactions across the entire propulsion system, to ensure designs incorporate the safety features required to enable certification.
  • Support integration activities and reviews with internal and external customers, and air system contractors and certification authorities.
  • Support P&W Integrated Product Teams, Chief Engineer, Airframe manufacturers, Suppliers, and Customers in reviewing, assessing, and influencing engine designs to optimize safety-related metrics and assure safety certification requirements (CFR 14 or equivalent Parts 33 and 25) or Mil-Std-882 are met.
  • Lead the creation of system safety analysis documents: Systems Functional Hazard Assessments, Fault Trees, Common Mode Analysis, Particular Risk Assessment, Zonal Safety Analysis and Reports required as part of engine certification to CFR Part 33 (or foreign equivalent) and propulsion system certification CFR Part 25 Subpart 901, 903 and 1309 (or equivalent).
  • Participate in program reviews with Customers, management and suppliers.
  • Mentoring and oversight of the work of junior safety engineering staff.
The successful candidate must have a commitment to and own continuous improvement of P&W's safety engineering processes

Some travel may be required within and outside of the United States

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have a BS Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical or related engineering discipline
  • Minimum of 10-15+ years of technically, progressive Safety Engineering related experience, with proficiency in application and use of system safety analysis tools (FMECA’s & Fault Trees for the SSA) and processes and procedures contained in SAE Aerospace Recommended Practices (ARP) 4754, ARP 4761, or military safety standards such as MIL-STD-882
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Security Clearance, US Citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Advanced Degree
  • Knowledge of gas turbine engine and mechanical component hardware design and system operation
  • Self-starter, detail oriented, focused and possess strong organizational, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills
