Surety Mechanism Technologist (Early/Mid Career)

We are seeking a R&D Electromechanical Technologist to provide design, production, and surveillance assessment support on surety components\. These surety components play a critical role in assuring the safety and security of the nations nuclear deterrent in a wide range of environments including severe accident scenarios\. Departments 2613, 2614, 2615, and 2616 currently have multiple project teams responsible for developing the next generation of surety components and the responsibility for over 25 devices in the active stockpile\. These include electro\-mechanical switching mechanisms and environmental sensing devices\. These components involve complex mechanical interactions in assemblies of over 100 custom designed/built piece parts\. The selected individual would be expected to work in multiple phases of the product development cycle as part of a larger product realization team \(PRT\), typical duties would include:

+ Assemble prototype/developmental builds of complex electro\-mechanical mechanisms in a clean room environment

+ Participate in product realization team meetings to determine and track testing, assembly, and lab needs of the team

+ Perform in\-process and top level testing of components using COTS and custom designed test equipment

+ Participate in the development and setup of new testing capabilities involving: electrical actuation of solenoids, high\-speed video collection/analysis, electrical measurements, acoustic data collection, thermal chambers, and centrifuges

+ Provide support for environmental testing including: test equipment setup, hardware fixturing, unit testing during/after environments, and oversight of test lab operations

+ Perform disassembly based failure analyses \(post\-mortems\) of precision mechanical assemblies after testing using hand tools, microscopes, and digital imaging equipment

+ Serve as an owner for a lab with facilities including: clean rooms/benches, soldering stations, electrical test equipment, thermal chambers, mechanical power tools, 3\-D printing machines, ultrasonic cleaning systems, laser markers, digital imaging/microscopes, chemical fume hoods, and other basic lab supplies

+ Perform other lab owner duties including: arranging for or performing equipment calibrations/maintenance, stocking/ordering lab supplies, organizing/tracking training for lab workers, conducting primary hazard screenings, managing local chemical inventory tracking, ordering new lab equipment, disposing of old lab equipment through re\-application, etc\.

+ Design and develop tooling, fixtures, and processes to support assembly, post\-mortem, and test activities

+ Coordinate part manufacturing internally with Sandia manufacturing liaison and externally with the Kansas City National Security Campus and other vendors

Technologists within the 2610 family touch all aspects of product development, from conceptual design and analysis to system retirement\. + Associate's or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent discipline plus 3 years of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

+ Active/Current DOE Q\-Level security clearance


+ Bachelor's or higher degree in science, technoogy, engineering or mathermatics\.

+ Experience managing a laboratory and its operation

+ Experience working with product development teams in design, assembly, testing, and production phases

+ Hands on experience performing failure analysis and troubleshooting of mechanical products

+ Experience assembling precision mechanical products in a high rigor environment

+ Working knowledge and experience operating electrical test equipment including data acquisition systems, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc\.

+ Working knowledge and experience operating mechanical test equipment including MTS machines, load cells, torque sensors, digital measuring microscopes, etc\.

+ Working knowledge of manufacturing processes associated with precision metal parts \(ex\. CNC machining, gaging, CMM based inspection\)

+ Familiarity with CAD Systems \(e\.g\., Pro/E, Creo, or SolidWorks\)

+ Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing

+ Demonstrated ability to interact well with diverse teams

+ Ability to clearly communicate findings and observations to an engineering team in written and informal presentation formats

Department Description:

We are a mechanical engineering group responsible for safety and security mechanisms \(components\) for Nuclear Weapons \(NW\) applications\. The departments have responsibility for conceptual design, full\-scale engineering development, product characterization, product qualification, component production support, and on\-going surveillance\. Mechanisms for which the departments have design responsibility include unique signal strong links, environmental sensing devices, and weapon release detection switches\.
