Job Title:Student Intern - Engineering Sciences Summer Institute R&D Graduate Summer

:

We are seeking a Summer - R&D Graduate Intern

Sandia has established the Engineering Sciences Summer Institute (ESSI) to engage graduate engineering students in cutting-edge research and development of capabilities for predictive simulation, multidisciplinary fusion of core engineering disciplines with phenomenological understanding and computer modeling and simulation. ESSI will continue its intern program for the summer of 2016 where students perform research, development, and analysis in engineering mechanics. Typical projects are in the areas of heat and energy transport, fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, solid mechanics, mechanics of materials, and electromagnetic science and engineering. Core activities within the institute encompass the full spectrum of experimental discovery and validation, model development, code development, and engineering analyses at scales from atomic to continuum. Our work strongly couples both experimental and theoretical approaches to provide innovative and robust solutions. Student interns work under the supervision of Sandia staff on topics of mutual interest.

Sandia/California's Thermal/Fluid Science and Engineering Department is a multidisciplinary group of engineers and researchers who specialize in fluid mechanics and heat and mass transfer. The work mix in the group includes developing theory and models, performing scientific and high-performance computing, and executing applied engineering analysis for a range of experiments and mechanical designs. The group plays two primary roles in science-based engineering at Sandia: (1) developing new computational methods, capabilities and tools to describe fluid mechanics and heat transfer; (2) performing computational analysis to predict the design performance of engineered systems in defense, energy, and industry applications. Recent activities within the group include heat transfer modeling, porous media reacting flow modeling, multi-phase flow modeling, battery modeling, hydrogen storage and safety technology, fluid dynamics modeling, combustion and heat transfer modeling, turbulent heat transfer simulation, and applied uncertainty quantification to all of these application areas.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.
