The position will lead wide range of services and support for the Strategic Communications function in upstate NY, primarily in the company’s Eastern Division. The individual in this position will d evelop and manage internal/external communications strategies, plans, policies and projects that advance and protect National Grid’s reputation. Responsibilities include helping to lead crisis/emergency communications, managing media relations (including 24-hour availability), and identifying, creating and delivering key messaging to internal and external audiences through a variety of traditional and digital communications channels. This is a position for a proven professional communicator.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Develop and implement strategic and tactical communications plans to support local, regional and national company business strategy. Represent the company as a media spokesperson regionally on a wide range of issues and subjects. Direct and active participation in all aspects of emergency planning and response, including potential extended travel to support emergency response activities across the company’s US service area (New York and New England.) Support relevant communications efforts/needs for leaders of the US business and executive leadership as required. Develop and maintain effective relationships with key internal stakeholders across our various business functions, and provide timely communication advice and solutions that fit the needs of the business. Develop and manage strategic internal/external communications plans/projects/policies that advance the company’s/New York jurisdiction’s strategic priorities, and business performance. Work collaboratively with the broader Corporate Affairs and US Strategic Communications teams, to provide strategic, aligned and timely internal and external communications. Provide quality writing services for internal and external campaigns and channels. Actively participate in social media, both as part of strategic campaigns and to support day-to-day communications activities. Develop, implement and continuously improve end-to-end processes and procedures to streamline and improve the delivery of all internal/external communications to target audiences. Help promote and implement communications measurement principles and practices to evaluate effectiveness of communications programs and campaigns. Manage the relationships with external vendors and creative service providers to develop and implement effective communication solutions.
Qualifications Knowledge & Experience Required: Minimum of 3 to 8 years of experience, depending on level in a corporate internal/external communications environment with direct experience providing strategic guidance to senior executives and leading project teams. Bachelor’s Degree required in communications or related field, or comparable experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to simplify complex concepts under tight deadlines. Experience in emergency/crisis management. Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely for both internal and external audiences, including (but not limited to) content for various internal communications channels, news releases, media advisories, fact sheets, white papers, executive speeches and presentations, employee newsletters, blogs, social media, etc. Writing samples must be provided. Demonstrated knowledge of and participation in all aspects of social media. Demonstrable knowledge and experience of all aspects of internal/external communication mix, including channel management, research and measurement. Action-orientated, motivated by results with ability to handle ambiguity and change. Experience in organizations focused on innovative communication strategies and solutions a plus. Experience in any or all of the following is preferred: Familiarity with content and project management tools, particularly Podio, Huddle and Google Docs/Analytics Experience with PowerPoint and Excel Experience in a matrix reporting environment The position requires extreme flexibility and the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced, fluid environment. Periodic travel required, primarily to other upstate New York company locations, with occasional travel to National Grid’s downstate NY and New England offices. Managerial experience for higher level position is preferred.
