The UTC Aerospace Systems’ (UTAS) Electronic Systems Center (ESC) is a strategic business unit headquartered in scenic Phoenix, AZ. The ESC supports a wide variety of UTAS aerospace products with state-of-the-art facilities and expertise. The ESC team designs, tests, builds, and supports electronic components and systems for all parts of the UTC Enterprise. Examples include electric actuator and motor controllers, where these controllers consist of hardware, firmware, and software and interface with actuators, motors, and other electronic controllers and computers within the larger aircraft system.

Position Overview:
Staff Systems Safety Engineer will join the Commercial Systems Reliability, Maintainability, and Safety (RMS) team in supporting the development of innovative aviation electronics solutions for the world’s leading commercial aircraft companies.

Primary Responsibilities:
Performing (and / or mentoring others in) traditional safety assessments/analyses in accordance with ARP4761 & ARP4754, including but not limited to, Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs), Preliminary System Safety Assessments (PSSAs), System Safety Assessments (SSAs), Fault Tree Analyses (FTAs), and Common Mode Analyses (CMAs).
Aiding systems, hardware, and software engineering teams in defining system safety requirements during new development activity.
Reviewing of design and development documentation for safety critical equipment.
Reviewing Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA) for assigned subsystem.
Assisting with the creation and response to Customer Engineering Coordination Memos (ECMs).
Assisting with development of RMS Department process documentation.
Participating in ARP related audits, Design Reviews, and cross domain Systems Engineering peer reviews.
Providing assistance to and collaboration with Systems and Design Engineering Departments.
Supporting technical issue discussion and resolution with the Customer.
Leading small groups of engineers and mentoring less experienced Safety Engineers.
Responsible for successful completion of assigned tasks within committed schedule and cost.
Qualification: To be considered, responses must include information meeting EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE requirements.

Bachelor of Science in EE/CE/CS from an accredited institution.
A minimum of 6 years of experience in avionics system safety development.
Intermediate knowledge of Avionics systems operation and architectures.
Working knowledge of ARP4754A and basic knowledge of ARP4761.
Experience with CAFTA or similar Fault Tree analysis tools.
Appreciation for and ability to understand component failure modes and mechanisms especially in relation to their effect on safety analysis.
Experience with Configuration Management tools (such as DOORS, Subversion, ClearQuest, etc.).
Knowledge on how to prepare and present technical information to peers, to all levels of internal management, and to external customers.
Knowledge on how to coordinate several projects and complex engineering activities while balancing priorities and schedules.
