We are seeking a staff member to join our microfluidic research team to support our Sandia National Laboratory mission of exceptional service in the national interest\. We seek an individual to build new capabilities and expand our research portfolio in exciting new directions\. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a chemistry, engineering or biology discipline with a minimum of two years relevant post\-doctoral experience\. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in innovative micro\- or nanofluidics to solve real\-world problems\.



Required:



Requires a doctorate in chemistry \(analytical chemistry\) or engineering \(chemical, biological, mechanical or electrical\) or related discipline combined with a minimum of two years of relevant post\-doctoral research experience\. Strong preference will be for candidates who have demonstrated success in adapting microfluidics to solve real clinical or biological questions\. The candidate should have hands\-on experience in design and use of micro\- or nanofluidic technologies as well as a strong understanding of the relevant clinical or biological application space\.



The candidate must be a strong individual contributor within a multidisciplinary team comprising engineers, biologists, chemists, and programmers, and have the ability to build a research plan and write successful grant proposals\. Strong written and oral communication skills are required\. A demonstrated record of high technical achievement \(e\.g\. as evidenced by publications in high\-impact scientific journals\) and the demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research is required\. The candidate will have a unique opportunity to engage with top notch researchers performing both basic research unlocking new understanding as well as applied research with industrial partners through mechanisms like cooperative research and development agreements \(CRADAs\)\.



Desired:



Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following: molecular biology, microbiology, synthetic biology, gene\-editing, single cell analysis, next\-generation sequencing, point\-of\-care medical diagnostics, personalized or precision medicine, forensics, chemical or biological detection, bio\-printing or additive manufacturing\.



Department Description:



Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department, located in Livermore, California and Emeryville, CA, performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare and alternative energy\. We are a diverse research group with a focus on both basic and applied biological research\. We seek to address problems with strong ties to national security, such as biodefense and health security, through new research approaches and advanced technology development including microfluidics and nanofluidics\. We also seek to develop the science base required by industry to produce clean, efficient, and cost\-effective biofuels and other bioproducts on a commercial scale\. This work is carried out in partnership with the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute \(JBEI\)\. Our department is highly multidisciplinary, comprised of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology \(molecular biology, microbiology, virology, immunology and biochemistry\), chemistry \(analytical, organic and physical\) and engineering \(chemical, mechanical and biomedical\)\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
