The NIRP \(Nuclear Incident Response Program\) provides research and technical solutions, expert analysis, and highly trained emergency response professionals to support the federal government's response to an accident or act of terrorism involving radiological, chemical, or biological material\. The Emergency Response Software Development Team \(ERSDT\) supports the NIRP program by developing software applications used by responders to perform their response roles during emergencies\.



The Severe Accident Analysis Department \(SAAD\) creates several software products for the NRC, including the MACCS suite of codes for consequence and probabilistic risk assessment and RASCAL, which is used for dose projections and to provide recommendations for emergency response\. These software products support and are funded by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission \(NRC\)\. Both MACCS and RASCAL are used at Sandia, the NRC, and by domestic and international user communities\.



These groups need a Graphical User Interface \(GUI\) Software Developer\.



On any given day, the software developer will:



+ Work with the lead developer and software designer to: gather requirements, design, develop and test high\-reliability Java applications; and provide end user support for a number of applications used throughout Sandia National Laboratories, other agencies, and internationally;

+ Design and develop user interfaces for Java applications by setting expectations and feature priorities throughout the development life cycle; determining design methodologies and tool sets; completing programming using languages and software products; designing and conducting tests; troubleshooting development and production problems across multiple environments and operating platforms;

+ Interact with the Lead Developer and other developers to build software solutions that fit the scope requirements;

+ Work effectively in an Agile \(or adapted Agile\) software development environment;

+ Interact closely with customers;

+ Development activities to be done in compliance with application development, database, and middleware guidelines and standards;

+ Manage software application code using version control and problem tracking software expediently and accurately;

+ Create QA and user documentation to support the code development effort\.



Required:



+ Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Management of Information Systems, or relevant discipline\. Four years of relevant experience will be accepted in lieu of degree;

+ Minimum of 3 years experience developing Java graphical user interfaces for business or technical applications with a specialty in user experience \(UX\) and user interface \(UI\) design;

+ Hands on experience developing Java Swing or Java FX user interfaces;

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.



Desired:



+ DOE Q\-level security clearance;

+ Skill for writing reusable Java libraries;

+ Ability to explore and grasp new products and their design;

+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills;

+ Familiarity with source code control systems, specifically TFS and Git;

+ Familiarity with the Eclipse IDE for Java development;

+ Familiarity with Microsoft Visual Studio for HTML, C\#, and general Web Design;

+ Familiarity with developing applications using Cloud services;

+ Experience with scientific application development;

+ Extensive experience in JavaFX is highly desirable as much of the ERSDT need is in the development of new GUI in JavaFX\. Extensive experience working with scientific and technical software applications and direct interaction with scientists, engineers, and technical staff is also highly desirable\.



Department Description:



The Severe Accident Analysis Department \(8852\) has a specific focus on the modeling of severe accidents in nuclear power plants, developing computer codes to predict core melt down and radiological releases associated with such accidents\. We additionally model the atmospheric transport of radiological releases and predict their health and economic consequences\. These tools are used to perform risk studies and support probabilistic studies of severe accidents in nuclear power plants and other hazardous facilities\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
