Senior Technical Leader – Generation - Wind power

The Position

From within the power generation team, this role leads and supports wind power research, development, and demonstration activities through internal/external specialists as well as individual expertise and effort. The Sr. Technical Leader will be given considerable latitude in shaping project technical objectives and an opportunity to learn and create opportunities for cross-cutting technical work with other EPRI sectors.  The Sr. Technical Leader will conduct research in high-impact scientific fields and actively facilitate technology and knowledge transfer to EPRI members.

  • Plans, designs, and controls complex project work to meet member/client objectives on time and within budget

  • Leads competitive proposal efforts and new promotional work based on original ideas

  • Maintains familiarity with related technical areas and influences project teams in the engineering aspects of their work

  • Builds national and international technical networks with manufacturers, site owners, power producers, consultants, academia, and research organizations

  • Prepares publications in modern formats and delivers compelling presentations

  • Provides input into configuration management and documentation control

  • Works independently on technical activities without direct supervision

  • Manages small to medium level projects without direct people management responsibilities

Job Functions:

  • Manage R&D projects in wind power, including contractor selection, technical scope/approach, budget, report-writing, and customer communications

  • Lead teams of stakeholders who advise selection and scope of research that addresses industry issues

  • Organize and lead sessions at EPRI-sponsored industry workshops

  • Provide guidance on specific wind farm operation, maintenance and performance issues and problem resolution for EPRI members

  • Represent EPRI’s wind research area during site visits to member companies and in stakeholder interactions

  • Plan, design, and control complex project work and resources to meet member/client objectives

  • Lead proposal efforts, technical publications, and presentations, sometimes simultaneously

  • Maintain familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas


The Ideal Candidate Demonstrates:

  • An advanced degree in engineering (preferred)

  • Varied work experience involving project management, wind power generation, R&D

  • Active participation in industry conferences and workshops with strong experience in collaborative problem solving

  • Strong engagement in wind-related stakeholder organizations

  • Experience in successful scientific research proposals

  • Working knowledge of wind turbine designs, wind farm operations and associated technology issues, component failure modes, and life assessment methodologies

  • Ability to create technical objectives for problems where the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish, little or no precedence exists, and the use of creative imaginative thinking is required

  • Application of technical knowledge to broad industry objectives with ability to recognize strategic issues and connect them with the proper problem solvers

  • Capability to grow into leading national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations on collaborative projects

Education Level and Years of Experience:

  • 8-10 years of relevant technical experience in wind industry. Technical experience would include one or more of the following: wind turbine design, plant engineering, sales engineering, wind farm operations & maintenance, R&D.

  • Training or experience in one or more wind energy governing standards (IEC, GL, IEEE, ASME, etc.)

  • Requires limited supervision and guidance; optionally has experience as lead engineer or manager

  • Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for specialized technical objectives

  • Ability to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projects

  • Responsible for the success of individual projects; Manages multiple projects

  • Responsible for project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and technology transfer

  • Individual contributor

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Willingness to locate to Charlotte

  • Travel will be required at approximately 25%.
