Senior Technical Leader – Solar Generation

The Position
:

Leads and supports research, development, and demonstration efforts in solar generation through project work and management. Manages the development and application of products and services through use of internal and/ or external experts. Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Plans and directs schedules and monitors budget/spending. Facilitates external and interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budget. Conducts research in complex, high impact technical or scientific fields. Facilitates technology and knowledge transfer to EPRI members.

  • Applies technical knowledge to key industry issues and develops objective, practicable research solutions.

  • Tracks current and emerging issues of industry, identifies research needs of members/stakeholders, and assists development of programmatic research strategy.

  • Maintains familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas.

  • Manages multiple small to medium level projects in parallel without direct people management responsibilities by directing the work of small teams of internal and external experts.

  • Is responsible for technical, scheduling, and financial milestones of projects being met.

  • Assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives or problems where the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists, and the use of creative, imaginative thinking is required.

  • Writes and/or oversees creation of high-quality proposals (e.g., internal, governmental) and technical reports for internal and/or external (e.g., peer-reviewed journals) publication.

  • Leads and/or advises national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, government, and research organizations.

  • Assists in the organization and facilitation of technical meetings, workshops, or conferences with members, stakeholders, and/or industry at large.

  • Communicates strategies and results, written and verbal, to existing and potential members, and external stakeholders through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops and conferences.

  • Works independently on technical activities without direct supervision.

Job Functions:

  • Manages day-to-day operations and leads a range of projects in EPRI’s Solar Generation R&D program. This involves defining scope, work flow and labor resource needs; overseeing budgets, and directing project work to assure technical, financial, and scheduling milestones are met.

  • Identifies current and emerging technical- and market-based solar issues—informed, in part, by input and exchange with members, stakeholders, and industry at large—develops and/or applies knowledge to create practicable research solutions that are valuable to EPRI members.

  • Facilitates technology transfer of research solutions, as appropriate, to members, stakeholders, and/or industry at large through various communication means, such as reports, videos, webcasts, teleconferences, workshops, conferences, site visits, etc.

  • Represents EPRI’s Solar Generation program during visits and interactions with existing or future members, stakeholders, and industry at large. Presents research to upper management and executive-level leadership.

  • Organizes, leads, and/or facilitates sessions at EPRI-sponsored industry workshops.

  • Plans, designs, and controls the progress of complex project work to meet member/client objectives; prepares proposals, prepares and presents research reports.

  • Maintains familiarity with the progress and research opportunities in assigned technical areas through technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and other research organizations.

Requirements

Education Level and Years of Experience

  • BS in Engineering or Sciences; Master’s degree preferred.

  • 8-10 years of prior related experience. Individuals with advanced degrees may qualify with fewer years of work experience. Relevant experience may include such activities as engineering or R&D at a solar OEM, EPC, IE, utility, university, national laboratory, or government agency; asset management of solar plants (e.g., operations, maintenance, monitoring, diagnostics).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in successful project management, proposal preparation, budgeting, and business development activities.

  • Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives.

  • Experience in performing and/or managing research activities.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projects.

  • Requires limited supervision and guidance.

  • Experience in successful proposal preparation.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects.

  • Willingness to locate to Charlotte.

  • Travel will be required at approximately 25%.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Varied work experience involving project management, research and development, and solar power generation–preferably from photovoltaics

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and project management skills

  • Team player, willing to support other’s research objectives and deliverables

  • Self-starting, strategic thinker

  • Strong experience in collaborative problem solving and building consensus

  • Recognized thought leader in the solar industry as demonstrated through relevant publications, invited talks, and/or participation on technical advisory boards, standards development committees, etc.

  • Working knowledge of solar power plants and associated life cycle activities, such as design, engineering, commissioning, asset management (e.g., operations, maintenance, monitoring, diagnostics), and/or end-of-life considerations

  • Experience with application of machine learning and/or data analytics to solar
