Senior Research Fellow

ADDFab/Device Characterization

The Institute of Applied Life Sciences (IALS) at UMass Amherst seeks a Core Facility Director for the Advanced Digital Design and Fabrication (ADDFab) and Device Characterization facilities, located in the Life Sciences Laboratory building. The Director is expected to oversee the day-to-day operations of the facilities including maintenance and operation of 3D printing and related digital manufacturing equipment, implementation of safety protocols, operational and chemical handling procedures in accordance with applicable safety regulations, protocols and policies. The Director will be expected to participate in the research and development of new approaches to additive manufacturing. Additionally, the Director will provide technical leadership, manage technical support staff in the facility, facilitate and execute research and development work for external and internal users, and provide training for students, staff, and scientific personnel.


Example of Duties:

  • Reporting to the IALS Core Facilities Director, the Director will be responsible for the logistical aspects of the facilities, including physical space, daily operations, technical, financial, and personnel aspects of the ADDFab and Device Characterization cores.
  • Provide operational training to students, postdocs, staff, faculty, and external collaborators. This includes providing technical assistance, demonstrations, and the execution of proof-of-concept studies. Responsible for certifications and all operations.
  • Maintains a safe laboratory environment in accordance with Environmental Health and Safety directives, storing and collecting hazardous materials according to guidelines. Regularly tests emergency equipment and inspects hazardous waste streams. Keeps chemical inventory updated, monitors the safe practices of Facility users and serves as the Safety Training Manager and administrator for the facility.
  • Initiate engagement with private industries/academic institutions/government labs/funding agencies to encourage partnership and facilitate sponsored projects. The Director is also encouraged to aggressively seek external funding either independently or in collaboration with others.
  • Schedule and perform tours and demonstrations of the facilities to visitors and interested parties.  
  • Create and implement a networking strategy that will support the generation of new project opportunities.
  • Identify and recommend or participate in relevant conferences, business, academic, and technical seminars, trade meetings, etc., to make new contacts, identify new engagement opportunities to promote the facility, attract funding and encourage collaborations.
  • In collaboration with IALS Administration, prepare lab operating budget, estimate project specific charges for machine/user time, materials/supplies cost, negotiate service contracts with vendors, and suggest/implement policies that utilize financial resources effectively.
  • Assist the faculty in the development and execution of life science related additive fabrication lab courses or modules.
  • In conjunction with the ADDFab and Device Characterization Faculty Advisory Committees, recommend selection and purchase of new laboratory capabilities that meet future anticipated needs and maintain state-of-the-art capabilities.
  • Manages day-to-day maintenance of the Facility equipment, including routine calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Maintains a clean and organized Facility.
  • Interacts with instrument companies regarding hardware and software upgrades.
  • Organizes ADDFab and Device Characterization Faculty Advisory Committee meetings, offering recommendations for any beneficial changes to protocols and practices of the Facility.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in engineering, applied sciences, manufacturing or related fields required. Master’s or PhD preferred.
  • Five years’ operational experience required.
  • Experience collaborating with industrial partners preferred.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more areas of advanced manufacturing.
  • Minimum 5 years of related operational experience.
  • Knowledge of safe operation of 3D printing instruments, including metal operations, pre- and post- processes, and the safe handling of metal powders.
  • Knowledge of principles of laboratory operation and management.
  • Ability to maintain productive relationships in a laboratory environment and in user interactions.
  • Strong business and technical background with an ability to engage in technical discussions with customers/partners regarding product and application uses.
  • Experience conducting research in an academic environment is preferred. Must understand scientific methods and research requirements.
  • Environmental Health and Safety laboratory safety trainings relevant to ADDFab and Device Characterization will be required, and must be kept up to date.
  • Proven ability to maintain productive relationships with faculty, researchers, students and external collaborators including industry partners is expected.
  • Must be detail oriented and meticulous regarding documentation and data management
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in parallel and rapidly adjust to changing priorities


Supervision Received:

The Facility Director will receive direct supervision from the IALS Core Facilities Director with guidance and input from the ADDFab and Device Characterization steering committees.


Supervision Exercised:

  1. Number of non-student employees directly supervised: depends on technical staffing for specific projects
  2. Number of non-student employees indirectly supervised: depends on technical staffing for specific projects
  3. Average number of student employees supervised at any given time: depends on student staffing for specific projects


Salary commensurate with education and experience.
