Senior Project Manager – PDU Enterprise Architect

Charlotte, NC, Knoxville, TN, Palo Alto, CA

The Position:

This position supports the technical staff for enterprise architecture and integration within the Power Delivery Utilization sector.

Collaborating with EPRI members, internal technical teams, and sub-contractors is required.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage with architects at member utilities and to collaboratively develop leading practices and guidance for utilities facing architecture and integration challenges and harmonize the perspectives of both domestic and international points of view. This person is recognized as a subject matter expert and is involved in the research work of other public and private organizations in this field. Maintains expertise by in-depth involvement in the start-of-the-art research. Contributes to multiple projects within and cross-sector on whatever basis necessary for effective utilization of expertise.

Leads research efforts in particular scientific disciplines or technologies in relation to a multiple projects or a small program. Manages the development and application of products and services in those areas through contractors and departmental or cross-functional teams. Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective, for desired results. Plans and directs schedules and monitors budget/spending. Organizes the external and interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budget. May conduct research directly in complex, high impact technical or scientific fields.

Job Functions:

  • Ability to apply technical knowledge to industry issues and gain input on needs from members/stakeholders and identify current and emerging technical issues.
  • Provides a to EPRI customers and develops research or services opportunities of value to them that fit EPRI’s mission and capabilities. This will include solving customer problems, producing insights and information vital to the members, and delivering information in a manner that members and customers can and will apply.
  • Identifies the most qualified internal and contractor team to complete the work. Selects contractors, frames statements of work.
  • Responsible for directing the work of a small team of contractors or EPRI staff to assure technical and financial milestones are met.
  • Provides input for employee selection, performance management, and development planning.
  • Provides assistance to the EPRI sales staff in Member Services and EPRI International.
  • Leads national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, and academia and research organizations.
  • Communicates strategies and results, written and verbal, to program members, potential members and external stakeholders through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops and conferences.
  • Manages small or medium program or multiple projects including budgets and resources. Responsible for securing external funding or leveraging EPRI funding.
  • Works with other Information, Communication, and Cyber Security (ICCS) personnel on cross-cutting architecture and integration issues
  • Contributes to the development within the research program of enterprise architecture and systems integration

Assists with the Identification of the most qualified internal and contractor team to complete work.  Helps select contractors and frame statements of work, and manage contract resources to meet the statement of work objectives

Meets operational objectives and work plans of the enterprise architecture research program

Education Level and Years of Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field. PE or equivalent experience required.
  • MS in a computer-related discipline (CIS, CS, MIS), MBA, or equivalent experience desired
  • TOGAF 9 Certified desired
  • ArchiMate Foundation desired
  • 8 - 10 or more years of research and development project and promotional experience, including development of advanced concepts for internal research or equivalent experience
  • Minimum five years of utility industry experience, preferably in the application of enterprise architecture
  • 5 years’ experience as an enterprise architect
  • DODAF

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in successful project management proposal preparation, and marketing activities.
  • Responsible for project planning, budgeting, schedule.
  • Reports project results to members and advisors.
  • Entry level people management responsibilities or actively in development to manage people.
  • Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives.
  • Exercises good judgment, diligence, and attention to detail and demonstrate an aptitude for carrying out responsible technical assignments.
  • Experience in performing and/or managing research activities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Leadership and management capability overseeing an area of technical complexity
  • Effective in both interpersonal interactions and in making formal presentations to convey the value of the project set and assure understanding of customer needs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Works directly with member advisors to ensure member engagement and guidance
  • Presents project set content, value, and R&D at member locations and with member leadership; may be called upon to lead enterprise architecture workshops
  • Demonstrated ability to model concepts in Unified Modeling Language (UML) including behavioral diagrams such as use case, business activity, sequence, and data diagrams
  • Demonstrated ability to model architectural concepts in ArchiMate
  • Understanding of the utility Common Information Model (CIM) and related International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards
  • Understanding of the maturity model paradigm, e.g. Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and its application to smart grid, enterprise architecture and other domains
  • Understanding of the standards development process and its application to real world problems

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Proven experience in industry collaboration and navigating multiple points of view in developing system requirements
  • Multidisciplinary technical background and broad utility perspective; experience in architecting smart grid solutions in a utility environment
  • Continuous learner, constantly acquiring new knowledge and applying it to the enterprise architecture discipline
  • Excellent track record of decision making in uncertain conditions with a bias for action
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills
  • Experience working on an international level
