Under the guidance of the Engineering Suppression Leader, the Robust Design Leader delivers a best practice commercially focused product engineering service to WKPE and as appropriate, to other UTC operating companies within the Fire Protection Systems (FPS), USA region.

Key Relationships

  • Strong working relationships with employees at all levels and functions across the Fire businesses including quality, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, customer service and product management
  • Specifically the Kidde Matamoros extinguisher factory based in Mexico

Key Responsibilities

As a leader / change agent supporting product teams

  • Chair or participate as necessary on QRBs (product development project reviews) to help drive QRB success
  • Drive improvement and standardization of processes that help product development teams deliver “robust products”
  • Ensure that product development teams are meeting quality and safety standards of product design that result in robust products

As an expert, coach, teacher

  • Participate in the development, maintenance and interpretation of policies and standard work for engineering and coordinate their implementation
  • Provide guidance related to product development deliverables as well as materials supporting design reviews and project reviews
  • Be proficient in key areas of Robust Design including:
    • Critical Parameter Management
    • FMEA
    • Requirements Management
    • Risk Management
    • Marciano Analysis
    • Test & Reliability
    • Modelling & Design of Experiments
  • Provide training and support development teams in ing Design Quality management using SPC standards, methods, tools and concepts

As a member of the Global CCS/Otis Robust Design Leadership Team

  • Provide feedback to propagate best practices and lessons learned from local projects including:
    • COPQ improvements and cost reductions
    • Develop, implement, and improve both Operations and Engineering metrics related to process certification and design robustness (including Engineering Effectiveness metrics and standard work)
    • Ensure that project teams incorporate Design for Manufacturability and Modularity for new programs

Other Key Activities / General Responsibilities

  • Assist in and facilitate process improvement workshops such as Kaizen events and Value Stream Mapping events
  • Contribute to UTC ACE and EH&S goals
  • Proactively promote continuous improvement to improve product quality
  • Maintain and advance their personal development and areas of professional competency

  • This role requires a good mastery of the English language, and strong interpersonal skills
  • Thorough knowledge of and practical experience with good engineering practices such as Design and Process FMEA
  • Experience with quality tools and methods such as Six Sigma, 5S, Kaizen or other
  • Competency with MS Office software and statistical software such as Minitab
  • Product development or manufacturing experience preferably in HVAC, automotive or fire equipment industries
  • Ability to collect, review and synthesize data and report results to stakeholders effectively verbally and in written form
  • Ability to identify needs of the organization and/or customer, articulate necessary proposals and see projects through to completion
  • Presentation and training experience, preferably with audiences of varying group sizes, technical skill levels and levels of business responsibilities
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail, while also able to manage multiple priorities
  • Familiar with TS 16949, ISO9001, engineering standards, automotive quality standards and similar quality systems and processes
  • A self-motivated individual focused on delivering within defined deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Good risk management skills, good judgement in identifying which issues to escalate to leadership
  • Good time management, planning and organisational skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • Hands on approach, quick learner, problem solving, team member, and co-ordinator
  • Quickly absorbs product knowledge / proactive self-learner of fire safety and security standards
  • Able to regularly travel within and outside the USA, including travel to Kidde Matamoros facility and suppliers in China

  • BA/BS degree with 6-10+ years’ relevant experience
  • MA/BMS degree with 4-7+ years’ relevant experience
