The Advanced RF Applications department is seeking a highly motivated Product Design Engineer to participate in the research, development, troubleshooting and field testing of advanced RF/Microwave/Radar/Communications systems for important National Security applications\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Initiate, design, develop, execute, and evaluate new processes, products, or systems for implementing and integrating engineering solutions\.

+ Produce design, model, and product definition of complex objects\.

+ Determine product requirements based on user needs\.

+ Use CAD application software to develop electrical or mechanical design concepts\.

+ Create the design definition documentation utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing \(GD&T\) ensuring that the design can be effectively manufactured and inspected\.

+ Evaluate design options using optimization techniques\.

+ Specify materials, equipment, and supplies required to complete product development and evaluate vendor capabilities to provide required products or services\.

+ Establish and review design methods and procedures and prepare design specifications, analyses, and recommendations for presentation and approval\.

+ Assist in the end\-to\-end process to successfully deploy a product to the field, including robust documentation, end\-user demonstration and training\.

This position requires some travel for technical interactions and field testing\.

Candidates applying on this requisition may be interviewed and/or hired into one of several organizations at Sandia National Laboratories\.


+ BS Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering plus five years of relevant experience\.

+ Experience with general laboratory diagnostics and test equipment\.

+ RF hardware application experience\.

+ Educational background or relevant experience in at least three of the following eight areas:

- RF/Analog circuit design

- Communications Systems

- SATCOM C2 systems

- Signal Processing

- Embedded Systems \(Hardware/Software\)

- Firmware implementation of signal processing algorithms on FPGAs or DSPs

- Military and Civilian Testing Standards

- Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Systems


+ Motivation to contribute to US National Security

+ Laboratory skills and knowledge of Radio Frequency test equipment

+ Demonstrated field test experience

+ Demonstrated leadership experience

+ Knowledge of Matlab/Simulink or equivalent \(Octave\)

+ Knowledge of scripting languages \(Perl, Ruby, Python\)

+ Knowledge of mechanical design tools \(i\.e\. Solidworks\)

+ Knowledge of high\-level programming language\(s\)

+ Knowledge of RF Communications, RADAR, or EW systems and principles

+ Hardware level signal processing experience \(FPGA, DSP, or GPU\)

+ Ability to work independently and on a multi\-disciplinary team

+ Good written and oral communication skills

+ Active US Government security clearance

Security Clearance:

Position requires a SCI security clearance\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.
