A mechanical engineer is needed to support the growing variety of power sources projects within the Power Sources Technology Group \(PSTG\)\. This position is in Department 2545 but will support projects throughout Org\. 2540\. The PSTG provides cradle to grave research, engineering design/development and production of power sources used for NNSA, DoD, DOE, NASA and commercial applications\. Department 2545 is one of two engineering design and development departments within the PSTG\.

An experienced engineer is needed in order to transition, and substantively contribute, in a short time frame to organizational projects\. The individual selected will support multiple Product Realization Teams \(PRTs\) developing, testing and delivering high quality power source products and processes in a dynamic environment\. Supporting the evaluation and qualification of processes utilized in a variety of power sources is expected to be a significant part of this assignment\. Thus, the ability to apply both engineering and quality principles, tools and experience to battery development \(including assembly, materials, and joining\) is important to success in this role\. The selected individual is also expected to play a role in continuous improvement efforts including the enhancement of current PSTG processes and procedures\. Engineered safety and work authorization are instrumental to the way work is accomplished in Org\. 2540 and a key work activity for all employees\.

The ideal candidate is a detail oriented individual, experienced at working on a diverse set of problems and balancing competing priorities\. They must also have a significant amount of nuclear weapon product and process realization experience to draw upon\. A strong knowledge of quality principles and tools will enable the selected individual to contribute to multiple projects pertinent to the mission of the PSTG\. The ability to successfully interact with other members of the PSTG team and interface with both customers and suppliers are critical to success in this position\. Occasional travel will be required\.


+ Bachelor's and advanced degree \(master's or PhD\) in a relevant STEM discipline; or a bachelor's in relevant STEM discipline plus 4 or more years of relevant STEM experience; or 12 or more years of relevant STEM experience can be substituted for the degree requirements \(note this is a 2:1 exempt status equivalency requirement\)\.

+ In addition to the educational requirement, 5 or more years of relevant experience to include supporting NW Realize Product Procedures \(RPPs\), components and the production realization process\.

+ Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-Level security clearance


+ Demonstrated evidence of excellent teaming, communication and interpersonal skills\.

+ Experience with the fabrication of thermal batteries and primary lithium battery packs\.

+ Experience in the development and production of mark quality products particularly in regards to NAP\-24 and product/process qualification\.

+ Experience working safely around mitigated hazards associated with general laboratory environments \(e\.g\. high voltage equipment, hazardous chemicals and test equipment\)

+ Hands\-on experience with the technical processes relevant to power sources development and production including joining processes\.

+ Experience with welding development and the qualification of weld schedules is particularly desirable\.

+ Demonstrated ability to leverage a working knowledge of quality methods, techniques and requirements to mark quality production\.

+ Experience interfacing with suppliers in the evaluation and implementation of mark quality processes\.

+ Active/current DOE Q\-Level security clearance\.

Department 2545, Power Sources Design and Development is part of the integrated Power Sources Technology Group\. The Power Source organization provide cradle to grave R&D, engineering, and production of power sources including thermal batteries, thermoelectrics, and lithium primary and secondary cell batteries, as well as research into many other new power source technologies\. Power source technology is a growing need area both within the NW SMU and in the Energy, Climate and Infrastructure Security \(ECIS\) SMU\. While the primary customer of the Power Sources and Metrology Group is NNSA, both business areas are growing a customer base including DoD, NASA, other DOE offices, and commercial entities\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
