We are seeking an experienced R&D Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in material science to contribute on a multi\-disciplined team that provides technical analysis on a wide variety DoD/DOE weapon systems\.



On any given day, the candidate may be called on to:



+ Collaborate with technical team members to understand and define work to be completed\.

+ Brainstorm with technical team members new ideas for system advancement\.

+ Develop ideas for risk mitigation to customer\.

+ Build new teams from across Sandia to address specific or urgent needs\.

+ Serve as a single technical/programmatic interface for multiple levels of customers from various government and private entities\.

+ Document customer expectations, define performance requirements, and work with the technical team to assure all expectations and requirements are met\.

+ Balance cost, schedule, performance, and risk to optimize path forward\.

+ Define spend plans, monitor financial performance, and report to the customer on regular intervals\.



Required:



+ Bachelors degree in a STEM discipline and a Masters degree in mechanical engineering, material science or related STEM discipline plus five years of relevant experience\.

+ Laboratory experience in the areas of materials characterization with respect to how aging affects performance characteristics\.

+ Experience in characterizing material responses in extreme thermal and mechanical environments\.

+ Experience simulating material responses using numerical analysis\.

+ Active and ability to maintain a required US DOE Q Clearance\.

+ Applicants with the above requirements and an active DoD TS encouraged to apply\.

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a SCI clearance which may require a polygraph test\.



Desired:



+ Experience with advanced non\-isotropic composite materials in extreme environments\.

+ Experience in preparing and delivering oral and written technical reports\.

+ Demonstrated ability using numerical methods to analyze non\-isotropic composite system performance\.

+ Experience conducting flight and or ground\-based materials testing\.

+ Knowledge of US nuclear weapons complex, systems, components and processes\.

+ Experience working in multi\-disciplinary teams including experimentalists and analysts\. to collect and apply material response data to flight evaluation models\.

+ Experience using data acquisition and analysis software, including MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python or similar\.

+ Current, active SCI Clearance\.



Department Description:



The Systems & Technology Assessment Group conducts research, development, and engineering for the US Government\. The group is involved in the assessments of, development of technologies and sensors as part of the Information & Systems Research & Analysis Center at Sandia\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance to start\.



Position requires an active Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance or active clearance with another US government agency, e\.g\., DOD, to be considered for this position\.
