Engineers in the Product Realization and Engineering Assessment department are afforded the opportunity for exposure to component, subassembly, integration and system challenges, as well as crosscutting work spanning multiple weapon types\. This unique role within the nuclear weapon program exercises skills in weapon development, production and surveillance and draws on aspects of weapon safety, security, reliability, surveillance and quality\.

Our team provides critical technical evaluation and testing of weapon performance against requirements and the effectiveness of stockpile and development assurance efforts\. We engage the systems, components, and fellow surety organizations in evaluation and improvement of engineering practices, including requirements generation, design definition, data analysis, production and test anomaly evaluation and resolution, defect prevention, and qualification strategy and results\. We perform these functions throughout the design\-to\-retirement life cycle of a weapon and work closely with product realization organizations throughout the laboratory to identify cross\-cutting engineering quality opportunities for improvement and lessons learned\.

There is an opening for a Systems Engineer in the Product Realization and Engineering Assessment department\. Candidates must have the appropriate technical background to acquire an understanding of functions of weapon subsystems and components, test methods, and the implications of detected anomalies in development, production and surveillance\. The successful candidate will:

99. Confirm the surety of nuclear weapon systems through independent assessment and analysis focused on product realization and engineering quality\.

99. Participate as a member on Weapon Assessment Teams \(WAT\)\. WATs play an integral role for the nuclear weapon program by providing an objective perspective to characterize risk and inform decisions at the component, system, and nuclear weapon program levels\.

99. Analyze product realization artifacts \(i\.e\. test results, models, design definition, qualification evidence, etc\.\) to identify quality trends in component designs, manufacturing defects, and test data\.

99. Perform material, hardware, and software experiments to investigate technical issues\.
