We are seeking a R&D Systems Engineer

The successful candidate will join a collaborative team engaging on Mission activities that include analysis of remote sensing systems data, algorithm development, EO/IR sensor characterization and modeling & simulation\. Specific tasks include: radiometric sensor test planning and support; mission data analysis; remote sensing modeling, characterizing and optimizing sensing instrument performance, and technical analysis and design of next generation systems to meet overall system mission performance and operational goals\. The successful candidate will have opportunities to interface with Mission partners and operations personnel to address community needs and participate in R&D with cutting edge advanced systems\. Additional collaboration opportunities with engineers and subject matter experts from the program Flight and Ground organizations to maintain complex systems and develop new capabilities to address critical needs of the Nation also exist within the Mission Engineering and Analysis department, as do cross\-organizational efforts such as support to the development of next generation remote sensing system concepts and designs\. The ideal candidate will be self\-motivated, comfortable with dynamic, sometimes vague objectives, multidisciplinary teams, and a constant learning environment\. They will work with many elements of the Laboratory and with external aerospace organizations, be expected to deliver quality technical analyses and products, present them to colleagues and customers, and work well in a team environment\.


Masters degree in a relevant Science Technology Engineering or Mathematics \(STEM\) discipline \(e\.g\., Aerospace, EE, ME, Computer Engineering, Optics, Physics\) plus 2 or more years of relevant experience\.

Demonstrated ability to understand large, complex systems

Proficiency with MATLAB or similar language for development of analysis tools

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the development and delivery of presentations, proposals and reports

Ability to obtain an SCI clearance


Familiarity with remote sensing phenomenology

Experience with image and/or signal processing and analysis

Proficient in radiometry and electro\-optics disciplines

Proficient in Python, C\+\+, or Java for development of analysis software

Demonstrated ability to work well in a diverse, multi\-disciplinary team

Familiarity with multi\-physics analysis/simulation of sensing instrument performance

Creative technical and analytical thinking and problem\-solving skills

Strong interpersonal skills, including effective leadership, teamwork and negotiation

Interest in continued learning and expansion of technical capabilities

Department Description:

The Advanced Systems Program \(ASP\) is responsible for designing, developing, and managing ground systems for real\-time national security missions\. ASP is the primary Customer interface and user community interface for these unique systems\. We provide the technical design, integration, advisement, and oversight for delivery and mission extension through architecture, system engineering, technical integration and evaluation of systems, and mission system engineering and analysis\.

One of the responsibilities within ASP is Mission Engineering and Analysis \(06332\)\. This Organization is responsible for analyses of signatures & signals as they relate to mission definition coupled with payload & ground capabilities in optimizing system performance to meet customer mission technical requirements\. The Mission Engineering and Analysis Organization performs the following: radiometric sensor test planning and support; mission data analysis; remote sensing modeling, characterizing and optimizing sensing instrument performance, and technical analysis and design of next generation systems to meet overall system mission performance and operational goals\. The Organization provides a variety of deliverables to an array of customers that includes: analysis results, custom toolsets, simulation findings and technical guidance\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a SCI security clearance\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.
