We are seeking a R&D Systems Engineer

The successful candidates will join the Mission Engineering and Analysis (ME&A) team and be responsible for a subset of tasks that include: radiometric sensor test planning and support; mission data analysis; remote sensing modeling, characterizing and optimizing sensing instrument performance, and technical analysis and design of next generation systems to meet overall system mission performance and operational goals. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, comfortable with dynamic, sometimes vague objectives, multidisciplinary teams, and a constant learning environment. They will work with many elements of the Laboratory and with external aerospace organizations, be expected to deliver quality technical analyses and products, present them to colleagues and customers, and work well in a team environment.


- Master?s degree or PhD in Science or Engineering (e.g. Aerospace, EE, ME, Computer, Optical, Physics) plus 2 or more years of relevant experience

- Experience with multi-physics analysis/simulation of sensing instrument performance

- Demonstrated ability to understand a large, complex system, balanced with attention to detail

- Proficient in MATLAB or similar language for developing analysis tools

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including development/delivery of presentations, proposals, and reports


- Familiarity with spacecraft, satellite, or airborne technologies and/or operations.

- Familiarity with remote sensing phenomenology

- Experience with signal/image processing and analysis

- Proficient in radiometry and electro-optics disciplines

- Proficient in Python, C++, or Java for developing analysis software

- Experience with system performance analysis

- Demonstrated ability to work well in diverse, multidisciplinary engineering team

- Creative technical thinking, as well as analytical, research, and problem-solving skills

- Demonstrated ability to mentor, teach, and collaborate with peers

- Strong interpersonal skills, including effective leadership, teamwork, and negotiation

- Passion for learning and continually expanding technical expertise

- An active SCI clearance

Responsible for analyses of signatures & signals as they relate to mission definition coupled with payload & ground capabilities in optimizing system performance to meet customer mission technical requirements.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a SCI security clearance.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
