This job will require the system engineer to integrate safety engineering with a project team of various disciplines. The responsibilities include developing system safety program plans and performing hazard analysis, fault tree analysis, gap analysis and review of safety assessments and engineering designs for compliance with established safety criteria. In addition, the system engineer will analyze and recommend safety criteria in system design, equipment and procedures to control or eliminate hazards. The engineer may also be requested to participate in accident investigations involving injuries and damage to products or related facilities and assist in the identification of causes and corrective actions. Occasional travel to sponsor sites may be required. This is a unique opportunity to shape the system safety engineer role within our organization and become part of a dynamic organization with broad interactions across SNL and WFO programs. Position to be deployed a minimum of 50% to weapons program support.

Required:



Requires a bachelor?s and master?s degree in relevant STEM discipline plus two or more years experience; or bachelor's and doctorate in relevant STEM discipline. The requirement for a STEM Master?s degree can be waived for candidates with a bachelor?s in a relevant STEM discipline and engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development.

Knowledge/experience with electronic engineering and mechanical engineering design processes. Knowledge of systems engineering concepts, particularly requirements definitions, flow downs, and verification. Demonstrated experience performing system safety analysis to identify, track and control potential safety hazards that may impact the safety of personnel or equipment. Ability to obtain and maintain a required US DOE Security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.

Desired:

Formal education and/or training in safety engineering. Masters degree in electrical, mechanical or safety engineering. Demonstrated experience reviewing safety assessments and engineering designs for compliance with established safety criteria. Familiarity with MIL-STD-882 (Department of Defense Standard Practice for System Safety). Familiarity with Sandia National Laboratories MN471021 (Work Planning and Control Criteria for Safe Design and Operations). Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and ability to partner with all levels of staff and management. Demonstrated problem solving abilities.



The Department provides Occupational Health and Safety Engineering support services to the SNL/CA site and personnel. Support includes: radiation protection, industrial hygiene, chemical management, safety engineering and ergonomics.

Security Clearance:


Position requires a SCI security clearance.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
