R&D S&E, Systems Engineer (Experienced)

An R&D Systems Engineer is needed to join the multidisciplinary W87 project team\. In addition to working with other W87 system engineers, component engineers, and analysts, the successful applicant will work with scientists and engineers from LLNL to understand the requirements and impacts from their components\. The applicant will also work closely with the SNL/NM Military Liaison Department and the Production Agencies at Pantex and the Kansas City National Security Campus to ensure continued support of W87 products and processes\. Close interactions with the National Nuclear Security Administration \(NNSA\) and the Department of Defense \(DoD \- Air Force\) are also required to ensure that their needs and concerns are addressed\.

The successful applicant should have good written and verbal communication skills, including development and delivery of presentations and reports; strong interpersonal skills, including effective leadership and delegation, teamwork, negotiation, conflict resolution, and coaching and mentoring; and creative technical and critical thinking, as well as problem\-solving skills\.


Bachelors and master's degrees in STEM disciplines with over two years' work experience; or bachelors degree in a STEM discipline with at least six years relevant work experience

Ability to travel up to 25%;

Ability to obtain and maintain a U\.S\. DOE Q security clearance\.


+ Knowledge of the Nuclear Security Enterprise, production agencies, and/or interactions with the DoD;

+ Active DOE Q security clearance

+ DOD TS security clearance

+ Experience in analog, digital, embedded\-system, communication system, or RF circuit design

+ Experience in independently designing, testing, and qualifying analog/digital systems

+ Experience in laboratory measurement techniques and diagnostics, computational simulation and modeling, integration of subsystems, fabrication of prototypes, and planning and conducting qualification tests

Department Description:

The W87 Systems Engineering Department has stockpile stewardship responsibility for the W87\. The department leads and integrates all technical activities associated with Sandia's responsibilities for sustainment of the stockpile\. The department integrates new technology into the system design, including development, qualification, and production\. The department leads surveillance activities to discover latent defects or emerging aging trends and assess reliability through laboratory system tests, system flight tests, and component and material evaluation\. The department leads trouble\-shooting and problem\-solving efforts, supporting the U\.S\. Air Force in managing the stockpile\. Finally, the department leads physical and numerical simulations and material characterizations to deepen our technical understanding of weapon safety and security\. The department consists of system engineers with specialization in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or physical sciences\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
