Department 5814 has a position available to perform all\-source technical analyses of the evolving foreign state and non\-state nuclear weapon threats to our national security\. The successful candidate will interact with the national security community to develop a 360\-degree awareness of foreign state and non\-state technical capabilities related to nuclear weapons and develop cogent technical and engineering assessments for the national security community, leveraging the broad technology base within Sandia\. The technology areas include: hardware development and assessment, modeling and simulation, and testing\.

On any given day, the candidate may be called on to:

+ Collaborate with technical team members to understand and define work to be completed\.

+ Brainstorm with technical team members new ideas for system advancement\.

+ Build new multi\-disciplinary teams from across Sandia to address specific or urgent needs\.

+ Serve as a single technical/programmatic interface for multiple levels of customers from various government\.

+ Document customer expectations, define performance requirements, and work with the technical team to assure all expectations and requirements are met\.


+ MS or PhD in mechanical, electrical, nuclear, or aerospace engineering; physics; or other relevant technical discipline\.

+ Undergraduate degree in relevant STEM discipline\.

+ Plus two or more years experience\.

+ Demonstrated strong writing and verbal skills \(writing samples are desired\)\.

+ Ability to give briefings\.

+ Ability to obtain and maintain both DOE Q and Top Secret SCI security clearances, and willingness to take a polygraph exam if requested\.


+ Experience related to nuclear weapon and/or delivery system development, or related technology development\.

+ Experience using modeling and simulation tools in performing engineering and scientific assessments\.

+ Experience conducting hardware testing, including environmental testing and qualification\.

+ Laboratory experience in the areas of materials characterization with respect to how aging affects performance characteristics\.

+ Experience in characterizing material responses in extreme thermal and mechanical environments\.

+ Experience simulating material responses using numerical analysis\.

+ Experience with advanced non\-isotropic composite materials in extreme environments\.

+ Demonstrated ability using numerical methods to analyze non\-isotropic composite system performance\.

The primary mission of Departments 5812/13/14 is to assess the threats posed to US national security by foreign advanced weapons capabilities, especially nuclear weapons\. Our analyses inform policy makers across the US government responsible for understanding the threats and risks posed by these weapons\. This important program area is growing rapidly, and exciting opportunities to conduct all\-source intelligence analysis, computational modeling, and engineering studies are available for qualified applicants\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship\.
