We are seeking a candidate with a Master?s or a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry/Polymer Chemistry to join our Polymer Chemistry Lab at Sandia, CA. Experience is not a requirement; but, an added plus.

This position requires a successful candidate to work in a highly dynamic and exciting environment conducting materials research and development projects as well as handling fast-pace, rapid turn-around walk-in projects. The candidate will be working as a part of a team of high-performing technologists and highly experienced staff. Ongoing projects include optimization of adhesive bonding to various substrates, formulation of foams and encapsulants for component development, long term accelerated aging of polymers, formulation of new foams and desiccants, testing and long-term aging of conductive adhesives and studies on compatibility of polymers in hydrogen environments.

Primary Job Duties

1. Candidate should be able to apply technical judgement including the use of scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation and to formulate and test hypotheses so as to innovate and deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories mission areas.

2. The position will involve designing and carrying out experiments to elucidate the best formulation, processing conditions and properties of polymeric materials.

3. Casting and molding, development and optimization of conformal coatings and adhesives, and potting of electronic assemblies happens routinely in the lab. The ideal candidate is expected to perform and participate in the above mentioned activities as dictated by project needs.

4. Projects are based on systematic study towards a thorough understanding of the fundamental aspects of observable facts and in addition to this approach, the ideal candidate will look for development of new approaches or methods towards achieving sponsor?s/Sandia?s customer?s goals.

5. The ideal candidate will support and successfully execute multi-disciplinary R&D projects by supplementing his/her technical training and problem-solving skill set to that of others? on the project team.

6. Arranging meetings with customer/sponsors about establishing test/product/process requirements towards meeting project needs and monthly updates to them on progress made is expected.

7. Preparing memos and reports that will be delivered to customers/sponsors summarizing the results of R&D work and long term projects is expected.

8. Candidate may need to undertake/aid in the development and possible transfer of solutions, products, principles or technology from the design agency to production agency.

Required:



Master?s or Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry /Chemistry or related disciplines

Technical knowledge and competencies appropriate to the position

US citizenship and the ability to obtain a DOE Q-level Security Clearance are needed to perform the job duties described

Experience in polymer processing (synthesis experience is a plus)

Knowledge of the use of modern analytical techniques for characterizing polymers (DMTA, GPC, SEC, FTIR, SEM, TEM, NMR, TGA, DSC, GC-MS etc.)

Demonstrated commitment to constantly improving ES&H and security as well as an understanding of activity-level (hazardous work) and laboratory operations

Desired:

Ability to team across multiple disciplines and backgrounds

Ability to travel

Good verbal and written communication skills, including development/delivery of presentations to technical and non-technical audiences as needed

The Materials Chemistry Department is a group of Chemists, Material Scientists, and Chemical Engineers who actively supports the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile by providing materials expertise to SNL's non-nuclear components. We use our understanding of chemical properties to design, evaluate and exploit monomers, polymers and functional materials. Our core competencies span foams, composites, adhesives, plastics, surface finishing and electrochemical deposition. We have the facilities for materials characterization, design prototyping and WR processing.

Security Clearance:


Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
