We are seeking a creative experimental R&D S&E, Electrical Engineer to design, develop and test new pulsed power systems, as well as perform research and development of advanced pulsed power components and concepts. The initial job responsibilities will be focused on a fast-paced project to deliver a novel injector for a linear induction accelerator, requiring innovations in pulsed power design and diagnostics. Collaborating with the other US National Laboratories, the linear induction accelerator system will fill a critical national need for advanced radiographic capabilities. Other projects in this department will include upgrades to the existing Z-machine pulsed power systems, and research and development for the next generation of high-current z-pinch drivers.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

+ Circuit modeling of pulsed power systems and concepts
+ Electrical design and analysis of pulsed power components
+ Acquisition and processing of fast digitizer waveforms and other data
+ Design, implementation, calibration and trouble-shooting of pulsed power diagnostics
+ Collaborate with mechanical engineers to specify, design and procure custom components
+ Design and execute tests and experiments to assess and qualify components and systems
+ Develop concepts for novel engineered safety controls for pulsed power systems
+ Work as both as a principal investigator and as a key team member of a multi-disciplinary group doing research and development at the cutting edge of pulsed power technologies
+ Collaborate with researchers at other U.S. National Laboratories and Industry
+ Complete and maintain a rigorous set of safety training

Required:



+ Bachelor?s and Master?s degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering with two years' relevant experience
+ Experience with high-voltage, high-current pulsed systems
+ Experience with design of pulsed power systems or technologies
+ Experience using electronic circuit simulation tools
+ Experience with analytic and computer modeling of electromagnetic and electrostatic fields

Desired:

+ PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering
+ Experience designing and trouble-shooting controls and diagnostics for pulsed power systems
+ Experience with high-vacuum systems and experimental apparatus setup
+ Experience using and trouble-shooting large, pulsed-power waveform data acquisition systems
+ Demonstrated ability to perform independent research in developing pulsed power technologies
+ Demonstrated ability to work well with a large and diverse research team
+ Project management experience
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in technical publications and in technical and project presentations
+ Active DOE or DoD security clearance



Sandia?s Pulsed Power Sciences Center performs research and development for a variety of nuclear weapon and national security applications, such as inertial confinement fusion, high energy density science, pulsed x-ray sources, and pulsed neutron sources. This research employs and develops fast (nanosecond to microsecond) pulsed power systems such as Z, RITS-6, Mykonos, and Thor. We are developing several new modular systems such as a new Z-pinch driver, a dynamic materials driver and a linear induction accelerator injector.

Security Clearance:


Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.
