We are seeking a candidate with a Masters or PhD in Chemistry/Polymer Chemistry to join our Materials Chemistry Department\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work in a highly dynamic and exciting environment conducting materials R&D and handling fast\-paced, rapid turn\-around walk\-in projects;

+ Work as part of a high performing team of technologists and experienced staff members;

+ Work on ongoing projects which include optimization of adhesive bonding to various metallic and non\-metallic substrates, formulation of foams and encapsulants for component development, long term accelerated aging of polymers and subsequent testing, formulation of new desiccants, and properties testing, and studies on compatibility of polymers in hydrogen environments; characterization of polymers before and after exposure to various test conditions;

+ Act as a point of contact to component engineers, systems engineers, and funding sources;

+ Provide the technical basis and experimental evidence for materials decisions for various applications;

+ Engage in project definition, seek to define new projects and/or expand existing projects, and participate in professional activities\.

Travel is required in this position and the successful candidate must have the ability to travel as needed up to 20% of the time\.


+ Bachelor's in STEM;

+ Master's in STEM plus 4 years relevant experience or PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Engineering, or related field;

+ Experience in polymer synthesis and processing;

+ Knowledge of modern analytical techniques for characterizing polymers \(DMTA, GPC, SEC,FTIR, SEM, TEM, NR, TGA, DSC, etc\);

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance\.


+ Active DOE Q level security clearance;

+ Ability to team across disciplines and backgrounds;

+ Good written and verbal communication skills including presentations;

+ Demonstrated commitment to safety;

+ Demonstrated ability to work as a team player;

+ Mechanical testing experience with metallic and non\-metallic substrates;

+ Project Management experience\.

Department Description:

The Materials Chemistry Department is a group of Chemists, Material Scientists, and Chemical Engineers who actively supports the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile by providing materials expertise to SNL's non\-nuclear components\. We use our understanding of chemical properties to design, evaluate and exploit monomers, polymers and functional materials\. Our core competencies span foams, composites, adhesives, plastics, surface finishing and electrochemical deposition\. We have the facilities for materials characterization, design prototyping and WR processing\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
