We are seeking a R&D Nuclear Engineer



Department 6634, WMD Detection and Threat Analysis, has a need for a staff member to measure and assess field radiological conditions and provide recommendations on protective actions for responders and the public\. Work time will be divided between developing and conducting training and operational procedures, maintaining equipment, interacting with responders from other government agencies, and travel for meetings, training, and real\-world events\. The successful candidate may participate in the Radiological Assistance Program and the Consequence Management Program\. There is opportunity for research project participation to improve the tools and methods for radiological emergency response\.



Required:



Masters degree in Health Physics or related discipline \(like Nuclear Engineering\), or equivalent combination of education and experience\.



Ability to obtain a Q clearance\.



Willing and able to travel \(12 trips per year\)



Able to conduct field radiation surveys in a wide range of environments



Desired:



Experience using health physics instrumentation



Knowledge of applicability of radiological instrumentation for laboratory and field measurements \(e\.g\. detection of low\-energy beta emitters\); which detector is appropriate for which measurement scenario



Familiarity with gamma spectroscopy



Ability to assess radiological survey data



Knowledge of personnel protective measures for emergency responders \(e\.g\. dosimetry, stay times, personal protective equipment\)



Familiarity with Environmental Protection Agency protective action guides and their implementation



Familiarity with modern data transfer methods \(Wi\-Fi, cellular, routers, servers\)



Good oral and written communication skills



Department Description:



The WMD Detection and Threat Analysis department, 6634, performs applied research and development for WMD detectors and associated assessment algorithm and software tool development, conducts field testing and data collection, and provides leadership and support for real world responses to nuclear/radiological incidents\. Some department personnel lead and support key aspects of Sandias Nuclear Incident Response Program \(NIRP\) that are led out of 6630\. The department has a solid core customer base through NNSA NA20 and NA80 and also supports several key SPP customers including DoD, FBI, and DHS\. In particular, the department has an established reputation with government agencies and commercial industry in the field of radiation detection and assessment and trace explosives detection\. In collaboration with other departments in 6630, the department has growth opportunities in the development of advanced R&D capability development to support the NIRP and related missions\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
