R&D, Nuclear Engineer (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking a R&D, Nuclear Engineer who is responsible for performing risk analysis for high consequence systems and facilities\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work on research and development of advanced risk and hazard methodologies such as dynamic probabilistic risk assessment, various hazard analysis methods, and advanced decision analytics;

+ Perform risk research related to cyber security and supply chain risk management methods;

+ Utilize skills related to machine learning, Bayesian Networks, and computer model development;

+ Support customers such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Department of Energy, Electric Power Research Institute, and other federal agencies\. This work supports program requirements for domestic and international communities in creating the safety basis for various high rigor facilities;

+ Be flexible to do the work in this department which is related to the nuclear power industry, but is expanding to support risk assessment in other high consequence areas;

+ Some travel in this position, both nationally and internationally, would be expected\.


+ Bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM discipline;

+ Advanced degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Chemical, or Reliability engineering or another relevant engineering discipline;

+ Knowledge of Probabilistic Risk Assessment \(Level 1, 2, or 3\);

+ Knowledge of risk and hazard analysis methods such as ET, FTA, STAMP, HAZOPS, or FMEA;

+ Background in advance nuclear reactor concepts;

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.


+ Demonstrated knowledge of probability and statistics;

+ Strong familiarity of commercial nuclear reactor systems or other large industrial facilities;

+ Understanding of risk\-informed methods or decision analysis;

+ Knowledge of machine learning;

+ Knowledge of Bayesian Networks;

+ Experience with Dynamic PRA methods;

+ Familiarity with non\-light water reactor designs;

+ Familiarity with the nuclear regulatory process\.

Department Description:

The Risk and Reliability Analysis Department conducts probabilistic risk assessments \(PRA\) and analyses, human reliability analysis and fire risk analysis research\. The focus of the department's efforts is on operational risk analysis of high\-consequence engineered systems including civilian nuclear power reactors and transportation systems\. The Department's client base includes the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Department of Energy, and other federal and non\-federal entities\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
