We are seeking a Research & Development Mechanical Engineer to join a team of researchers focused on development, validation, and application of advanced diagnostics for the harsh environments relevant to Sandias national security mission\. Our team develops in\-situ laser\-based diagnostics for fire and combustion\. Applications include hydrocarbon and propellant fires as well as explosive environments\. In this role, you will have access to state\-of\-the\-art laser sources including multiple amplified and tunable ns, ps, and fs sources along with advanced optical sensors such as high\-speed cameras, intensifiers, and spectrometers\.



On any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Lead a world\-class laser laboratory focused on development and application of Coherent Anti\-Stokes Raman Scattering \(CARS\), planar laser induced florescence \(PLIF\), laser induced incandescence \(LII\), pulse\-burst laser diagnostics, and other related thermo\-chemical measurement techniques

+ Collaborate with other staff members to provide laser and optical diagnostic expertise to support work in supersonic and hypersonic aero\-sciences, multi\-phase diagnostics, and solid mechanics, among other application

+ Develop laboratory\-wide collaborations across multiple Sandia organizations and work as part of a multi\-disciplinary team

+ Lead fundamental Research & Development efforts across the team of multiple technologists, post\-doctoral appointees, and student interns

+ Shepherd advanced diagnostics from the laboratory to the large\-scale and complex environments relevant to Sandias mission

+ Perform all duties in compliance with operational safety, security and quality guidelines



Required:



+ Bachelors degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering or a related discipline

+ Masters degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering or a related discipline

+ Two years related experience

+ Experience with laser diagnostics

+ Experience with data acquisition hardware to include developing and validating data processing routines in programming languages such as MATLAB

+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance



Desired:



+ PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering or a related discipline

+ Ultrafast \(ps and fs\) laser experience

+ Experience with signal processing

+ Experience in laser physics and advanced optical diagnostics for fire and combustion environments

+ Experience designing and leading research projects

+ Experience with combustion dynamics, fluid mechanics, and energetics



Department Description:



The Diagnostic Science and Engineering Department \(01512\) develops and applies diagnostics for engineering sciences applications\. We develop the expertise needed to adapt measurement techniques to challenging environments and understand the additional uncertainty which may be introduced\. For model validation, we work in tandem with modelers to design optimum experiments\. We assist data users in interpreting and understanding experimental results\. Finally, we apply our expertise to understand the limitations of any diagnostic and the experimental uncertainty of the resulting data\. The department is engaged in experimental activities in fluid mechanics, multiphase and reactive flows, rheology, shock science, and the thermal, chemical and mechanical characterization of materials, including polymeric and energetic materials\. Our efforts are focused on \(1\) development and application of advanced diagnostics, \(2\) conduct of fundamental experiments to unravel unresolved phenomenology and to characterize material properties and material response, \(3\) design and performance of validation experiments supporting the Center's code development efforts, and \(4\) experimental support for weapon qualification/certification\. The department has responsibility for the operation of thermal/fluids laboratories, pilot\-scale multiphase flow test\-beds, full\-field measurement of material response and material characterization \(DIC\), and rheological characterization facilities\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
