Department 2547 has an opening for a Mechanical Engineer to assume design and development responsibility for several of the department's thermal battery and Li primary battery products and to work with our sister departments in support of battery production and qualification activities\. The departments power sources design and development capabilities require a combination of skills and knowledge including mechanical engineering \(design, manufacture, test, and analysis\), materials, electrochemistry, and data analysis\. The primary activities for the position are the design, development, production, and testing of power sources for our nuclear weapons customer as well as occasional work for others projects\. The position also requires integrating with other components and system level requirements and to be able to work with our production agency and vendors to manufacture and qualify our designs\.



Required:



+ Bachelors and masters degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Chemical Engineering or in a relevant Physical Science \(Chemistry/Physics/Materials\)

+ Experience planning and conducting research and development

+ Experience in designing and testing hardware

+ Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-Level Security Clearance\.



Desired:



+ Ability to communicate scientific and engineering findings to internal and external contacts\.

+ Demonstrated understanding of energetic materials/devices applicable to advanced power sources technology R&D

+ Familiarity with software including Creo/ProE, Solidworks, MATLAB, Ansys\.

+ Knowledge of production and ability to work with production partners\.

+ Project management experience\.

+ Demonstrated ability to develop operational procedures and documentation to ensure the safe operation of laboratories\.

+ Demonstrated teaming ability\.

+ Active DOE Q\-level security clearance\.



Department Description:



Responsible for research, design and development activities including materials research and process development and prototyping related to batteries \(molten salt and ambient temperature\) and RTG's for a variety of applications\. Significant work for DOD, DOE and other NFE customers\. Technologies supported include high temperature \(molten salt\) batteries, lithium primary and secondary batteries as well as hybrid systems and double layer capacitors\. Primary focus is on technology application to meet a variety of customer needs\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
