R&D, Mechanical Engineer (Experienced)

We are seeking a Mechanical, Nuclear, or Civil Engineer \(or other relevant science or engineering background\) in the Advanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle Technologies Department \(8843\) to join our team\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform R&D and applied technology development to address technical and safety issues associated with the use of nuclear materials in nuclear fuel cycles and space applications;

+ Perform R&D related to storage, transportation, and disposal of nuclear wastes;

+ Design, build, lead, execute, and analyze experiments of nuclear material, infrastructure, and waste storage methods;

- Field\-scale pressure\-vessel experiments of severe accident conditions \(e\.g\., air\-steam interactions, fire tests\) at the on\-site CYBL and Surtsey facilities;

- Experiments and data collection to support licensing of dry storage canisters and casks;

- Collect experimental data for assessing response of safety components to severe environments, and/or provide realistic data to benchmark computer codes;

- Develop time and cost estimates for experiments\.

+ Help with other current projects which include:

- Evaluation of impact and consequence associated with security aspects of managing radioactive materials;

- Analyses of storage and transportation methods for spent nuclear fuel, including R&D on fuel cladding and dry cask storage systems;

- Modeling and analyses of supporting space launch accident sequence evaluation\.


+ Bachelor's in STEM;

+ Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Civil Engineering, or other relevant degree;

+ Demonstrated ability to conduct research and development;

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE L or Q\-level security clearance\.


+ PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Civil Engineering, or other relevant degree;

+ Demonstrated experience working in team environments with other scientists and engineers;

+ Basic understanding and/or capabilities for modeling and simulation of nuclear waste storage and transportation systems;

+ Experience running or participating in field\-scale tests;

+ Experience working in a rigorous quality environment such as NQA\-1 or ISO\-9001;

+ Established experience with material science and heat transfer;

+ Basic understanding and/or capabilities for uncertainty quantification and probabilistic safety analysis;

+ Experience with scientific programming in a Linux or Unix environment \(e\.g\., C, C\+\+, Fortran 95, Python scripting\);

+ Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks while working in a high\-pressure environment driven by schedule constraints, cost considerations and stringent quality requirements;

+ Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to develop technical ideas and results and present them in oral and written form\.

The Advanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle Technologies Department conducts R&D and applied technology development to find solutions for technical and safety issues associated with the use of nuclear materials in nuclear fuel cycles and space applications, and R&D related to transportation and storage of nuclear wastes from commercial facilities\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
