R&D Mechanical Engineer (Entry/Mid-level)

An opening exists for a mechanical engineer to support a power source product realization team \(PRT\)\. This individual will join a high performing technical team in the design, development, qualification, and delivery of highly specialized power sources for national security applications\. These components frequently must be designed to meet demanding performance specifications, offer extremely high reliability, enable integration and interfacing to complex host systems, and meet stringent survivability requirements in adverse environments\. The successful candidate will support the PRT through development and qualification activities including maturing design definition into production\. Job responsibilities will also include ensuring that work is conducted in a safe and secure manner with respect to all of Sandia National Laboratories and Center 2500 guidelines\. Some travel will be required\.


+ Bachelors and masters in mechanical engineering or relevant science, technology, engineering or mathematics \(STEM\) discipline\.

+ Experience in mechanical design, CAD modeling and design for manufacturing

+ Able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance


+ Ability to apply attention to detail and create thorough documentation of technical work accomplished\.

+ Demonstrated initiative and organization skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines\.

+ Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills\.

+ Knowledge of the NW drawing/EA system\.

+ Experience in one or more of the following: designing; working within projects that require adherence to standards and requirements; and working with NSC in maturing mechanical drawings for production

+ Experience with power source design

+ Experience with materials used in power sources

+ Ability to work successfully in a team environment with various disciplines of engineers and scientists\.

+ Experience working with the National Security Campus in delivering War Reserve quality hardware\.

+ Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing \(GD&T\);

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
